there was this .exe file in /dell folder called DSRIRRemv2.exe

i used it and removed the partition, however i still think its not part of my HD . i used partition magic and it is showing its fine and i cant merge it or do anything with it

any ideas ? i rather not fdisk it as i have installed many things on my windows now

You can't add that partion to the rest of the hard drive without redoing the partions...you will have to reformat...at least that is my experience on the matter. If it shows in your "My Computer" I would just use the space as like a 2nd hardrive...save all of your pictures and etc on it.

Hmm, I'd be careful doing that.

It seems that you have the PC restore by Symantec thing done on your computer, however if you delete that partition, it will be gone and in the future if you want to restore that computer, that it will be gone and you basically have nothing to "fix" your computer with unless you want to call up dell and order a Dell restore CD or whatnot, unless you have a cd already.

i'm not sure why you can't merge with partition magic. maybe you have to change the file system?

i wouldn't worry about getting rid of the restore partition unless you wanna restore with all the bloatware on there. i did a reformat/reinstall/merge all partitions about 5 minutes after i received my notebook.

yes. That is what the spare/restore partition is. It is the partition that will reformat your pc back to factory condition...so it will have all of the junkware and you'll lose your files.

if you have the backup OS disk from dell or your own copy of XP disk that matches your system, there really isn't a need to keep it. Everything that you mainly need is either on the XP disk or you can call dell to get CDs that have all of the extra software like Cyberlink Powerdvd, etc.
