    Replace CD/DVD Drive (Dell)

    Hi guys, My CD/DVD Drive started to freak out. (Dell inspiron 6400) Do you know if it is possible to replace it with any compatible CD/DVD Reader/Writer?

    There should be a search button on NBR lol

    There is a search on NBR, look up on the navy bar beside "New Posts".

    Most laptops use the standard modular slim DVD drive.     All you then need to do is remove the DVD bezel from the factory Dell one and snap it onto the new drive.

    I think that new members don't have access to the search button. But you can always use the one at the top right, it's the same.

    I have the inspiron e1505, which is almos identical to the inspiron 6400, and I have also had optical drive problems. It has to do with connectivity. Just flip the laptop over, and unscrew the one screw which holds the optical drive in. Than remove the optical drive and insert it back in. Than rescrew it in place and it should work fine again. Also cleaning the laser lens is also a good idea, cause it may not be able to read any discs if the small lens is dirty. Simply use a microfibre cloth to clean the lens.

    thanks I'll try this before buying anything new! I think the w1505 and 6400 have the same ODD because I just take gave a look at ebay and it seems they are the same.

    they are the same. The drive is made by TSST, and it is a standard 12.7mm thick optical drive. If yours fails to work after the tests, than I would recommend getting a new optical drive like the pioneer dvr-k16 or dvr-k17, or one of the panasonic UJ ones, they are pretty nice drives for the money

    I have a dell inspiron 600M and want to replace the CD / DVD drive. I spent the last hour looking for info on this. I didn't find anything in the dell user manual.
    I replaced the keyboard myself and wanted a picture and list of steps like that to replace the cd / dvd drive.
    Can anyone help? thx
