I have a piece of crap tsst dvd burner in my machine and nothing works any more. I would like to replace it but I am hardware ignorant. Is anything made for laptops compatible or do I need something specific. My dell stats are in my sig. Thanx for any help :)

Edit: Recommendations would be highly appreciative. I wish to burn dvd/cd's but not so much rewrites. And the warranty has expired. Thanx

I had to replace mine as well. I have an E1705 that came with a TSSTCorp too.
I would suggest contacting Dell and getting a replacement. I specifically asked the rep to put a note NOT to send another TSSTCorp (Toshiba-Samsung), and I recieved something else (can't remember ATM) and it has worked great since. :)
    Good luck! :)

I don't think Dell customer service personnel actually have any control over what specific part you get. Just like in the case of the grainy screens. I'd venture to say that Talin didn't get another TSST drive by chance.

Since you're out of warranty, I'd look on ebay. There are plenty of e1705 drives out there and you can see the brand on some of them. It should also be cheaper than buying from Dell. Just make sure you buy one that's guaranteed against DoA.

Thanks Commander Wolf. I was actually trying to find out if any slim brand would work or only certain models would fit. Appreciate the reply :)

The problem isnt so much the slim brand as the bezel (side of chassis) will not always fit on and or match up. Its best to make sure it goes in your specific machine.

If your E1705 is still under warranty, tell Dell. I had mine for a few months before I realized the TSST burner was simply not able to burn anything. I dropped Dell an Email, explained it, and after a couple of back and forths from their tech support asking the typical scripted stuff they 2-day'd me a replacement non-TSST drive with a pre-paid return shipping thing.
