I got a Dell Studio 1737 through the Dell Outlet, and after a little while the Num Lock light stopped working. The button still turns it on and off, and I've been debating calling and having to deal with them to get a replacement. Another option I've been thinking about is replacing it outright with the backlit keyboard.
My question is this. What will doing this outside of Dell do to the warranty? The Caps Lock light does still come on, so I'm thinking it's an issue with the light, and if I have to replace it, I might as well go with the better one.

Try contact Dell Support first. In my experience, they have been quite helpful.

You can replace the keyboard yourself and it will not affect your warranty status at all. I replaced my old Studio 1535's standard keyboard with a backlit one as well.
It's way worth it; go for it! -
Just got off the phone, and they directed me to the parts department for the backlit keyboard, but they are gonna send me the fix for the num lock issue, so I'm not complaining.

Be polite, who knows they might offer you the backlit version at cost price. I had to have my display changed out because of some dead pixels, and I got the upgrade to 1600x900 on the Inspiron for about £25 GBP (i.e. cost price); it is normally 4 times that when bought new.

I should see if I can get them to do that; I want to get the 1080p display panel for my 1555. My girlfriend's 1555 with 1080p just arrived, and it is beautiful. I thought my 720p was a good display, but now I see what everyone's been talking about; this 1080p panel just blows mine away in every regard. Clarity, brightness, viewing angles...wow. I feel so poor now.

Got off the phone with them after getting disconnected with the online chat due to a "system upgrade". They had sent me the wrong part after I called Sunday. They sent me the upper plastic piece with the volume controls, because I guess they thought that's where the num lock and caps lock indicator lights were (they even had me "test" the scroll lock button...). So I called them to get the actual keyboard replaced.
They were slow online with the chat too. I was averaging a 2 minute wait after I would say something before I got a response. That could be a network issue, and may have been what they were upgrading, but let's hope they get it fixed.
If all goes well, I should have the keyboard by Thursday. They wanted me to ship it to a depot at first, but I told them I could do it, so they're going to call me to help walk me though the install, but it should be pretty straight forward. -
can someone help me remove the keyboard. I dont want to start pulling off parts and break the laptop.
Just a couple quick instructions or pics would be great -
