Hello all, I am trying to find a replacement DVD+RW for my Dell Inspiron 1720. The dvd+rw that came with the laptop is a PBDS DS-8W1P 8x Slim DVD+RW.

Any help in this matter is appericated.

p.s. the original drive had a dram test failure so i assume that the drive is toast.

It looks like a standard 1/2" thick slimline notebook burner with PATA interface. One of these should fit. You may need to swap the fascia as explained here.

The insprion 1720 uses standard ATAPI optical drives.
Your drive is made by Philips & BenQ Digital Storage technologies.
Your system uses 12.7mm thick optical drives, so you should be able to use a wide variety of optical drives.

Most of these should work, just make sure that the drives are 12.7mm thick, like the one you have. (You may have to google the model number newegg states, and find out what the thickness of the drive is)

Before buying a new drive, you may want to try giving your old one a cleaning.
Use a small amount of rubbing alochol on a q-tip and gently clean the small lens in the optical drive.
Clean the lens gently until it is all clean.
After you are done cleaning the lens you should try burning another cd/DVD. Chances are the lens is dirty, causing the disc not to burn right. Cleaning it should do the trick. If not, you can buy a new optical drive.
If you are under warranty, just call Dell and you can get a new replacement drive for free.

Thanx for the info, unfortunately the warranty ran out in August. I ran Dell's diag. and thats where the DRAM failed on the DVD drive. I will try cleaning first. Again thanx.

Is your drive not working? Or have you just run a test on it?
