Hi there, i finally pinpointed the origin of the high frequency noise coming outta my m1210: the harddrive. It seems that everytime the whine goes the LED would either turns off or on in sync with the rythum of the whine. Does anyone know whether if Dell would come to my place and replace the faulty hard drive or will I have to send it back to dell and wait for dell to send me back a replacement ? Note that i do not have onsite repairs, only complete care and extended warranty. This is In canada; does anyone had similar experiences? Also, maybe is it because my hard drive is 7200rpm that is causing the noise?? Help needed please..!!

    You answered yourself.
If you don't have on site repair, they won't come to your house to repair it.
If the lappie warranty is still on, you'll probably have to send it... but try contacting them first.

I dunno how much noise is that, but HDDs shouldn't emit high pitched noises. Too much noise coming out from an HDD is basically a warning sign that it's going to fail soon.

Then again, HDDs can do some noise.

I think the question of what they will do will depend like was stated on your warranty. To answer the noise that sounds bad. If it is in sync with the HD light then probably it is the drive. Call them and ask. See what they will do to help you. They may be able to send a drive with all your software installed and you can change it out. That may not be an option but a thought. I am not sure how hard the drive is to get to. But sending in the whole laptop might be a good idea as well. Then if something caused it the drive to go bad that may get fixed too. Atleast they could test all the components.

Great! I was gonna sugest trying that, but I though it wasn't an option (to remove the HDD yourself and send it).
    Good luck!

Yep. They do that even if you have on-site. They will ship you the replacement item for stuff you can do yourself then have you ship back the "defective" item. They bill your account and once they get the defective item back they credit your account for the amount of the bill.

HDD might be a sympton not the cure. Most times the whining is caused by inductors in the DC-DC PSU section, and the HDD is just making it whine at different levels as the HDD spins up and down. Hope it is the HDD, but don't hold you breath....

i just got the hd and the sound persists. right now i am asking for an exchange. i just found a little thread on the dell forum and it seems to be a very common problem among m1210 users...

well it seems that all computers with core 2 duo makes the same noise... prolly has something to do with the design of the cpu..

Mine does not make that sound and I have a Core 2 duo. In fact it is practically silent except for when the fans come on and the hard drive does its thing. The hard drive is making the typical hard drive noises that I hear from desktop drives.

I didn't quite understand what timfountain wrote (maybe I'm just repeating him), but another cause for high pitched noises might be the power supply.
Some components might be defective, and they may produce the noise themselves, or make other components produce it due to instability.

I don't think CPU design has anything to do with noise... CPUs can't produce noise by themselves. Also, I've seem lots of Core 2 Duo working silently.
Could also be some cooler fan, but can't tell for shure.

In any case Jokkon, it's best if you send the whole notebook back. They'll know what to do and how to fix it.

If there's a problem with the power supply, you will have to send it anyways... :D
