    Hi,

I'm looking to replace my current 1366x768 15.6" screen with one from an XPS 15z that has a 1920x1080 screen. As far as I can tell (by looking at Dell replacement parts online) it seems as though the new screen should fit perfectly due to the same dimensions and the connectors used in both are the same (40 pin connectors) I'm just curious as to whether or not it will actually work.

My n5010 has an ATi Mobility 5650HD card so it has the ability to output in 1080p obviously through the HDMI port, however I'm unsure about the maximum output over LVDS.

    Any and all help appreciated.

Just return your XPS 15z and get one with 1080p. It'll be cheaper that way.

Like in the original XPS 15, Dell may be using separate cables for the HD and FHD screens, in that the FHD cable works for both HD and FHD (dual-channel) but the HD cable only works for HD (single-channel)

I have an Inspiron N5010 not an XPS. I see about the cables.. You could be right, why fit a FHD cable to a laptop that doesn't need it (my N5010). So to be able to fit the XPS screen I'd need to buy the new screen and an FHD cable as well.

As for returning it, I bought it a while ago so no joy there.

Must have missed the part in your post where it said N5010

The XPS 15 1080p cable might work, but no guarantees.

I don't think anyone has attempted this.

    Woopti f**king doo

So basically I'm trying something that has never been tried before, as far as we know, and spending at least £100 for the replacement screen.

Well I suppose I'll just post a reply if it every works.

    Thanks for the help Edit1754

Actually do you think this would void my warranty? :D

Changing the screen doesn't void your warranty, but damage that may be caused by doing so isn't covered under the warranty.

And of course put your old screen back in if you need to get it serviced under warranty, just to be safe.

Just to contribute, one of my coworkers cracked his L501x (XPS 15 R1) screen and he had the 720p screen. He decided to upgrade to 1080p. However when he upgraded it the colors were all messed up and pixel-ey. He had to order the LVDS cable from the 1080p XPS 15 and then it worked good. So you will likely need to order a different LVDS cable and I'm not sure if that is guaranteed to work in the N5010.

EDIT: Nvm it may not work.

L501x and likely the XPS 15z had the additional connector that the N5010 doesn't have.

Damn! It was looking so promising until you came along, glad you did though thank you. Oh well guess maybe I'm stuck with 720p until I get a new laptop :(

Well didn't want to burst your bubble but rather that then you waste your money.

You might want to look at a Studio or the Latitude E6510 which have the same screen size (15.6") and aspect ratio (16:9), you might be able to get 1080p to work. I believe there is a different connector for the XPS series as some of the 1080p (if not all) are RGBLED.

it seens a little bit late that i found this topic. i wanna change the lcd since the day i brought my N5010 a few weeks ago cause its dimension sucks. i even found the panel model i wanna replace to - LP156WF1, but after knowing that replacing the lcd panel requires change the cable too, i really feel disappointed

Grantchan, really the cost of a cable shouldn't be off putting, it's a small price to pay to have your new screen up and running. If you do decide to go ahead with the upgrade please reply back here with your results.

LVDS cable shouldn't be more than like 20-40 dollars.

On the first image (501x) that little cable(3) is not for displaying picture on the screen. It is digitizer board cable, and it's used for touch screens or touch panels or something like that. So I think there's still a Hope. :)

I'm going to order new LVDS FHD Cable (V73D3) for my Dell N5110 and I will see if it works.

I don't think it is a digitizer cable as XPS 15 was never sold with multi-touch capabilities to my knowledge. Not sure if it is for the B+RGLED screen or has to deal with the ability to get 1080p, probably the first part as full channel LVDS cables can do 1080p just fine.
