Has anyone here ever tried or had success in getting factory installed XGA screen replaced with a higher resolution SXGA+ after purchasing the laptop?

My laptop came with an XGA resolution screen which works great brightness and otherwise... But my only problem is that XGA is too low a resolution for my work especially that I do alot of research work and would prefer to have 2+ pages open on my screen simultaneously..... I had an SXGA on my old presario 1800US and it worked great with no problems watsoever...

So I called dell the other day to ask if they could replace my XGA with an SXGA+ and I will pay for the upgrade.... they said that this is not possible... which of course doesn't make any sense coz I know that they do have SXGA+ screen option on the customize website for I6400/E1505 but they just wouldn't upgrade my screen..

My only regret about buying my laptop is the low screen resolution...but I bought it from ebay so I didn't have the option to get a higher res. screen anyway and I got a good deal on it so I can't complain......

Dell cs suggested that I sell the laptop (returning is not an option coz I bought it from ebay) and buy a new one with a higher resolution screen..... which means hundreds and hundreds of dollars in loss for me :( :( .. so I'd rather upgrade the screen on mine if that's possible, especially that I don't have any problems with my system (aside from the screen of course)

My question is ... do you think I can make a strong case with dell out of this?
Has anyone ever upgraded their screen thru dell before? did the dell CSR b.s. me by telling me that it's not possible although I know that it is??

P.S. I'd rather not buy one from ebay etc. since in this case I'll have to install the screen on my laptop which will essentially void my waranty... so that is not an option for me....

Sorry for the llong thread but Any suggestions, comments, recommendations would be appreciated :D :D :D :D

Sorry but upgrading you're screen is completely implausible. I don't think you can press it with dell unless your screen was faulty.

I think you're stuck unless you wanna buy a whole new laptop.

Buy the new LCD you want from Dell Spare Parts & do the swap & sell the original LCD. The new LCD will be covered by the laptop warranty if it is bought from Dell (LCD model must be meant for your laptop model). However, this is still going to cost you quite a bit, though not as much as if you buy a whole new laptop. Good luck.

Actually, when I called dell to discuss the screen upgrade thingy with them, they tranferred my call to someone in the parts department, who inturn informed me of the bad news that I couldn;t actually do that.....

I am starting to feel that the CSR was actually bsing me coz he didn't know what to say..... I think I'll call them again tomorow to see what they have to say about it..

Say that they agree to ship a new higher res. screen to me... Would installing the LCD at home (not be a profesional) not void my warranty??

Your chances of success is pretty low. Your best bet is to just buy an external LCD. For a 19' you can get for like $99 that way you can have your notebook's LCD + a second one for whatever documents or whatever.

Yeah, they aint cheap, Ebay will be your best bet, or sell your current machine and buy what you want, in the world of notebooks, dont settle on core components, screen, videocard, chipset, even cpu, as upgrading while sometimes possible, is usually very expensive, and carries many additional risks, buy what you want/need up front, ram/hardrive are pretty much the only internals easily and affordably upgraded. Good luck.
