New to this thread: My son's Studio 14Z had a broken screen, so I ordered a replacement screen from an online vendor (Laptop Parts in Brooklyn, NY). I removed the old display after taking off the bezel, and gently disconnected the cable. Now, the replacement screen looked somewhat different - I mean the circuit strips looked different, but the screen certainly fit and the connection appeared to be the same. So I plugged the connector into the new display (it's such a tiny, thin piece of metal that I'm not 100 percent sure it seated correctly, although it seemed to be.) Then I replaced everything, powered it up - and nothing - the display stayed dark.
I haven't been able to reach the vendor yet. I'm hoping someone here can give me some ideas about why it's not working, and what to try, before I just tear it back down and mess with it.
How likely is it I got a replacement part that isn't the right one? Any way of checking?

    thanks so much

What was wrong with the original screen? Was it cracked? Is it possible that the problem here isn't with the screen, but with something else?

That being said, is the screen totally dark, or can you still faintly see what's displayed, etc?

No, the screen was definitely broken - someone stepped on it. No image at all on the screen. I heard back from the vendor, wants to know the ID numbers on the old and new screens (which means removing it again!) - maybe he sent the wrong part. Bummer.

Try hooking it up to a monitor. If it works on the monitor than it's the LCD that's bad.

Definitely the display is the problem; I've now ordered and received two new screens giving the best info I could find for specs, but neither one is the right one!!!!!
The service tag number has worn off the laptop. I have googled "display for studio 1440/14Z but I still can't find what the exact replacement number is. on the Dell site it looks like it's been discontinued, but that can't be right. Any ideas on how to identify the exact display I need? thanks thanks thaniks

Boot it into BIOS with an external display. You should be able to find the service tag there.
