Hi guys, I have an inspiron e1505/6400 that i bought about 4 months ago, and I want to replace the DVD+-RW drive. It is a Phillips SDVD 8820 and it is a POS. It has already made coasters of many types of DVD-R media (Taiyo Yuden/Verbatim (MCC)), produces movies that are not readable on 2 of my Sony DVD players, and I am not content with it at all.
I wanted to replace this drive with another one, but I am not sure which drives I can put into the laptop to fit.
Also I was wondering which drives are better that I can put on the system?

Does anyone know if Dell will replace these at their own cost? I have a 3 year warranty on the laptop so I hopefully will be able to make use of it.

You should be able to get a replacement from Dell. Call tech support and tell them that you are pretty consistently getting coasters. They may have you run a few diagnostics, etc...but if the drive is dead...they will replace it. I have not had a problem with the TSST L632D...

To replace your drive...on your own...you can purchase a slim DVD burner from places like Newegg. Remember that your existing drive fits into a sleeve that keeps it in place in your machine...so if and when you replace (with one from Dell or purchase)...remove the old drive from the sleeve. Put the new drive in the sleeve and then install in your machine. Also...make sure that the jumpers on the new drive are set to master...

see the problem is that my drive isnt dead. Its just a garbage burner.
I dont think that Dell would replace it unless it really is dead.
And living in Canada, i dont have access to such sites as Newegg, making it even harder for me to get a slim dvd burner.

And after I bought the system with the drive, dell puts up a disclaimer that they do not guarantee compatibility with the drive...

The only problem I have with my TSST is that it hates RiData DL disks. So if I need to burn a DL DVD I just use a friends burner. Other than that no problem. Just call or chat and ask them. Worse they can do is say no.

is there a place where i can talk to these people online as opposed to on the phone? I really dont have the patience to deal with their tech support people on the phone
