Well, just like so many others I have read about, my 9-cell battery on my Dell1505 is dying. When I got it 18 months ago, it held 4-5 hours which was beautiful, now it's down to 50 minutes.

I want to replace it soon. I see my options as Dell, ebay, or 3rd party website.

    On Dell it's an insane $300 http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=dhs&c=us&l=en&cs=19&k=1505+battery&cat=all

On ebay, non-OEM replacements are about $70 http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-9-Cells-BAT...ryZ14297QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Websites like notebookparts.com have it for $100 not sure if these are OEM or not http://www.notebookparts.com/products/description.php?II=22892&f1044b

I've searched this site trying to find if batteries from ebay are OK http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=21148 and the consensus is iffy, depending on if they're OEM or not.

My dilemma is.. these 1505 batteries are horrible http://reviews.dell.com/2341/312-0428/reviews.htm

SO why should I spend so much money going through Dell on a battery that I will probably have to replace in a year anyway?

    Thoughts on this?

    Thanks!

Dell's prices are a lot because it is a discontinued part. They haven't sold the laptop in a year so their supply is getting lower. (simple supply and demand). Ebay is your best bet but ONLY get oem batteries.

Thanks. But that leads me to my question of why get OEM. If the OEM batteries are so awful (which they indeed are) why strive to get them? Why not get a 3rd party battery for 1/3 the price that has a 6 month warranty?

I agree, if I could find an OEM on ebay I would grab that, but I can't find any.

I'm curious to know too. eBay have a bunch for 45$ 9cells wereas Dell sell them for 300$ and notebookparts sells them over 160$ (100$+60$ because of the shipping oversea). Even for quality issue you can still replace like 3 times before you reach the price of a OEM.

Is notebookparts legit OEM parts? I need a new battery for my M1210 and I'm about to risk it on an ebay china junk battery because at $300 from dell, it would make much more sense for me to off this heap on ebay and buy a new laptop.

I've never bought one there, but I seriously doubt it. At that price $100 or so, one would have to assume not. Although it does state "UY628" which is a Dell battery number.

But again, the question here is, does it even matter. Normally, I'd stick with an OEM product, but with all the problems with these Dell batteries, who is to say the non-OEMs aren't just as good, or better?

And at 1/3 the price, I'll go and buy 3 of them from notebookparts.com (or 4 off eBay) for the price of 1 Dell battery and just hope to get 6 months out of each. I'd still come out ahead.

It looks like this may one of those threads with more questions than answers. Hopefully some more folks like vtn chime in who have bought replacement batteries.

Well, just to provide you with more information, I have not looked at Ebay, only Pricegrabber and Amazon (where I found the one I bought). I was kind of afraid because of the mixed reviews, but I realized that it was the second bestseller in computer accessories at Amazon, so I thought that if only three people complained about it, it would not be that bad for 65 bucks :) . Until now I feel like buying a 9 cell 6400/E1505 battery for that price was a great deal, even though it is not an original one.

You say "Until now I feel like buying a 9 cell 6400/E1505 battery for that price was a great deal, even though it is not an original one." What do you mean by until now? Don't you still think it was a great deal? I guess that statement threw me off.

    OK, makes sense.

Anyone else? Last call!!! I guess this is indeed a thread with more questions than answers. I guess I thought with all the hoopla about how bad these batteries are/were that there would be more people chiming in with their experiences. Oh well. I guess I will flip a coin and decide that way. ;)

    Thanks all

Here was my recent experience. I was in the same position as so many here. My 9 cell battery for my 6400 just died and I too did not know what to do.

Get a Dell over priced piece of $hit 9 cell? No way. So Ebay Or somewhere else it had to be. Being Canadian we have fewer choices than our American friends as well.

I found a 9 cell on Ebay from a battery replacement speciality company.

    http://www.certifiedbattery.com/

They have an Ebay store and at the time had only a few left. They sold very fast. I was lucky to get one or take a chance on a Ebayer with one from Hong Kong or China.

So, I picked up my battery from the post office last night and popped it in when I got home.

As soon as I plugged the power supply into the back of the Laptop the battery charging indicator light came on green!

I Powered up the laptop and checked the battery status under Windows right away and found it was charging from a 38% mark.

I powered off the laptop and let it sit and charge on it's own. After about 2 hours the battery was fully charged. Booted into windows again and checked the battery meter which reported the battery being fully 100% charged with 4hrs and 25 mins.

At this point everything appears to be excellent. I'm writing this on battery power right now.

The only thing left to do is check what real performance I actually get and ultimately how long it will last, one, two years?

The quality of the battery is really quite good just like the original Dell.

Overall, I'm really pleased at this point barring any glitches in the next few days.

Now, I got a bit lucky as another fellow forum member ordered one from the same company at the same time and theirs didn't work. They had to pay to send it back for a refund. They actually wanted a replacment but are now apparently all sold out of the 6400/1501's replacment batteries.

If I get even one full year out of this thing it sure beats Dell's over priced replacement.

The battery is made in China but the sellers web site says that they apparently only buy from high quality standard manufacturers. The same manufacturers that produce batteries for name brand customers.

I love my laptop but I'm thinking that maybe I should sell the dam thing due to the battery lottery for the 6400/1501's and find a brand new laptop that has more reasonable prices for their replacement batteries.
