Is it possible to request the backup installation DVD of Vista with SP1 integrated? Has anyone tried?

I have been meaning to reinstall Vista from scratch, but the SP1 installation by itself takes about an hour to complete + the time to install Vista initially.

I just bought my M1330 about 1.5 months ago. I wonder what they meant by "new customers."

I'd be more than happy to pay a small fee to get a new disk from them, but they just wont do it. :(

Call Tech Support and simply ask for a replacement Windows installation CD because you want to install a fresh copy. They will ship one to you at no cost.

That is true, but we want the DVD with SP1 integrated and not the original RTM version. I will give it a try tomorrow.

They wont give you one with SP1. Sorry, you are out of luck. Just download the SP1 and go with it.

They will start giving you OEM Vista with SP1 integrated once they run out of the standard non-SP1 CDs, which would be very soon.

It might not hurt to try in a month or two then I suppose, but they only allow you to request one backup set of discs, and I already got mine so I couldn't do it.

That's interesting...in the past, they have never limited me. Every so often, I request a completely new set of discs for installation purposes, and they have never given me a problem. If this is indeed the trend, then perhaps we should heed to your advice.

    Thanks!

It said limit to 1 set of re-installation backup CDs per system purchased on their support website. It is up to the customer service person who processes your order if you are going order a second or third set. I'll wait for a couple months until they have exhausted the older OEM disk if you want to get the Vista SP1. For XP SP3, one may want to wait until the summer is over. Remember, they'll only send you the OS appeared on your original order but with the most recent revision.
    Request installation disk set here.

Ooh see, I never used to request them through the website. In the past I just call up tech support. Now that I think about it, I believe every time you need a hard drive replacement they usually offer to send you a set of replacement disks at no cost.

Can someone not just distribute the image once they get the new disc or is that not allowed?

First, it is not legal. Second, why bother if Dell can send you one for free.

For the link above, it is just for the SP1 itself. It is not the complete Vista installation disk with SP1 included. You can put the SP1 on a CD or a thumb drive. People are asking in this thread for the full version of Vista installation disk with SP1.

Whats not legal about bruning SP1 to a disc? You can only install it if you have a valid license.

Furthermore, MS offers ways to dowload Vista and SP1 direct from them. The OS comes with a 30-day eval period. Its not illegal to install the OS from a backup.

You can also buy an upgrade anytime disc from MS for like $5 (or maybe its $10). The caveat has always been you need to provide your own licensing.

Read my updated post again. Someone just reply to this thread a minute before I submitted my response to the earlier one. I quoted the one I responded for clarification. Although it may be legal to back up your installation disk (depending on your local law), it is not legal to DISTRIBUTE the image of the installation disk.

Yes, but I believe the OP already has the Vista disc and basically wants a combined disc incl. SP1 to avoid going thru the pain of DL'ing SP1 again. So the solution would be burn SP1 to a CD/DVD (along with any other updates) and install Vista then the newly burned disc with the service pack.

Having the original disk and then SP1 is different from having the Vista SP1 full installation disk. Most people went through the XP SP2 update and needed to do a repair or re-installation can tell you the difference.

So why are people allowed to slipstream installs then? You still need a valid key.

Slipstream is just like making backup of the installation disk. It may or may not be legal depending on your local law. Nevertheless, distributing pirate copies of installation disk with or without key is still illegal. For most softwares, there are hacks and cracks to allow illegal installation without keys.

By the way, you can't slipstream SP1 into Vista. Read here. At least, not in an easy way. Read here.
