So I ordered my M1330 on 7/20, which means I have a long wait ahead of me. But it looks like some other folks are getting theirs in this week. So I have a request (in addition to taking lots of pictures and giving some hands-on reviews): could someone wipe the drive, install Windows XP on it and report on that?

Does anyone forsee any problems with Windows XP on the M1330? Drivers may be an issue.

I'll be installing XP once the bugger gets here.. Can't stand the sight of Vista. Drivers are available for all components, so I don't see that being a problem.

Likewise. I'll first test out the laptop as-is, with Dell's preloaded software and drivers. If all goes well, I'll make my own image of that setup and store it just in case. Its important to make your own disc images of the things you do to customize your machine, for quick and painless recovery.

The rep I spoke to when I ordered my laptop mentioned that there weren't XP drivers for the Bluetooth module or the multimedia buttons. I dunno if he was just blowing smoke because they have to tout Vista or what, but I'll be very interested to see if he's right. Thanks all for volunteering to try it first. :)

Almost all my applications that worked on XP work in Vista.

for the most part, yes, they will work. but conflicts do arise between directX 9 and dx 10 causing most games to run poorly on vista, which is why xp is wtill the gamer's os of choice.

I don't know about that.. I'd say they may not run as well but they don't run poorly in my experience.

So far my only problem with software on Vista has been that I sometimes have to temporarily run programs in administrator mode to get them to work right. For example, Steam couldn't update itself properly unless I ran it in administrator mode. After that update, though, things have ran smoothly and I haven't been running it in administrator mode.
