Well it finally happened, the indestructible Inspiron 8600 (see sig) is showing weakness.

The last few weeks at boot the onscreen text has been tinted slightly red, which goes away after about 15 seconds. Today this progressed into a complete screen shutdown after displaying any high-resolution screen for 3 seconds. Dead as a doorknob.

My research leads me to the conclusion the backlight is toast - so I've ordered a replacement from ebay for $19.

The question is, is it an easy installation? I've had this Inspiron in pieces a few times before so dis-assembly isn't difficult, I'm just not familiar with the screen side. (I suppose a side question would be, is my diagnosis also correct? I read in some places it could be the inverter that powers the light rather than the light -- but the reddish tint seems to be a symptom of a dead light).

Thanks, looking forward to some responses.

Plug it into a monitor. If it works, the screen is the issue. If not something else is afoot. I believe if you plug your service tag into Dell's support site they have disassemble guides, though I could be wrong.

Well..... I can conclusively say it IS a screen issue, the PC functions very well except for video output on the laptop screen.

The question is whether it's a backlight, cathode or inverter issue.. as mentioned some research into it seems to point towards a dead/dieing backlight. I just wonder if my conclusion is correct..

How do know that if you can't see the screen.

That's a little hard to diagnose over the internet.

The computer functions as it should even with the screen black, I've also connected to an external monitor.

I really am looking for constructive help here not snide comments..

My comments are not snide. I am saying it's hard to really know what's wrong with something like that without looking at it. One can only guess as to what the issues are.
