Wondering if requesting the OS disk from Dell is free. If so, why don't they just include it when they initially send the laptop?

They don't include it because its already on your harddrive as a ghost image, thats why for example if you have a 60GB harddrive you only got like 58GB free, because that other space is being used by Windows XP setup thats on the harddrive.
You can order the install discs of XP from Dell, but I'm not sure what the costs are. -
no its free

Is this a clean XP disk? That is, I'd like to get the disk so I can do a clean install of the OS.

it is a clean xp disk. No software just operating system
-
the disc you get from dell is the OS only.
the image on the HD is a factory image meaning it will restore all the bloatware along with the OS
a 60 GB HD is about 55 GBs due to the 1024 vs 1000 math. the 55 GBs if further reduced about 3-4 GBs for the image partition. -
Just want to make sure before I buy a computer for my brother, if I buy a Dell I can still ask them to send the XP cd for free?
I don't really care about the other softwares because I could just download thtem off the main website. -
you can request it after purchase.
software is not available for download from dell, but drivers and things like quickset are. -
I only got an OS disc with my M90 through the Outlet. I called up and ended up with another OS Disc, a Resource Disc (what I originally wanted), all of the DVD software, as well as Roxio stuff, and a couple others. Of course I have 3 years complete care, also.
Requesting XP from Dell does it cost?
