I am getting very annoyed with the resolution setting for Inspiron 640M. It is a 14.1 inch TrueLife Wide-Screen WXGA+, some people suggested 800 x 600 pixels for smaller screen, and the review here mentioned 1440x900. If I set it at 800x600, it will not be a full screen, there are a gaps on both sides. If I set it at 1440x900, the fonts are absolutely too small and I almost go blind by reading the contents.

    Please help.

you have to run your LCD at the native resolution; i.e. whatever the maximum resolution is. if that's too small for you, then you should consider exchanging the notebook.

sorry to say this, but you should have researched LCD resolutions before purchasing the computer. your best bet is to look at them in a store like best buy or something.

they are not like CRT monitors that can handle multiple resolutions

Shouldn't have gone with the truelife. As mentioned you're pretty much stuck at native resolution. The non truelife has a larger resolution...

truelife has NOTHING to do with resolution, it is simply the glossy coat, you have the high res version of the screen, set it to 1400 by 900, then go into display properties, click the appearance tab, then set the font size to large

if its a new purchase, you can send it back, and get the standard screen 1200 by 800, I personally like to get the highest resolution available, but to each their own, try using the large fonts at the native res, if that doesnt work for you, start over

Thanks, Iceman, this was exactly what I did after I posted the above message last night. I think I can live with it. Believe me, I did all the research, even comparing it with Inspiron 6400, XPS M1210 (which I gave to my daughter), and Sony. I did not foresee the problem with resolution.

glad you got it worked out, I have a barely used 6400 15.4" that I'd happily trade for a xps m1210 :p

Actually the regular screen is the matte screen and lower res, and the truelife is the glossy with the higher res. So it has EVERYTHING to do with which one you buy...

Those are your only 2 options, so getting the truelife one will automatically get you the 14x9 resolution.

true life has nothing to do with resolution, its the glossy coating, xga+ is the resolution, I see now that on the 640 the standard screen is matte only, but on other models, such as the e1505, true life is an option on the satndard screen, and there has been a lot of confusion from people ordering true life, and finding out they only have 1200 by 800

I understand the truelife is the glossy. But in the case of this notebook there are only 2 options. Therefore it was easier to describe it by saying the "truelife". Had he not gotten that one, he would have the other resolution....

    Get it now?
