when i return to my laptop while being afk the screen goes all black. I guess this is the screen being turned off but whne i return i have no idea how the get the screen back on. I pressed on keys and moved my mouse but it stays off and the only way i know how to turn the screen back on is to turn it off and back on. Is somthing wrong?

Is the laptop still running or is it in Stand By mode? Stand By is a lower power mode, where just enough energy is going through the laptop to keep all the data in the memory. The power button should be blinking in that mode.

You can always change your power settings - Start, Control Panel, Power Options.

Might be going into hibernation. If you have Quickset installed, it might give you conflicts with XP's power management.

When you boot up, does it show a bar at the bottom during the process as you would see with hibernation? Or does it completely restart all over? Was the power light on or off? You said it wasn't flashing, but I might be able to figure out more if I knew if the light was on or off.

It should still come back up after hitting keys even in hibernation or Standby. It sounds like an OS conflict.

okay. Have you reformatted yet? Sounds more like an XP problem than anything else really. It might be a BIOS problem, but I imagine it is an XP problem especially if you have formatted yet.
