    Hi,

I bought a new Inspiron last week and got it yesterday - I am happy with it except feel a bit annoyed as I though wide screen of 15.6 would be the same as 15.4 normal screen in terms of height, but with a slightly wider screen. It turns out that actually it is half an inch shorter! And 768 pixels high does not seem enough.

I looked into the 17inch model and for only £25 more I can get the same speced laptop.

Does anyone know how much I might get charged for returning the 15 inch to get the 17 inch (it has been within 21 days).

Also I have installed itunes and Chrome - will that be a problem if I just de-install them?

or better the Customer Service forum.

Have you had it less than SEVEN days? That's what's important, if so you can change it without penalty. I forget if delivery is chargeable.

Search on 'Distance Selling Regulations' etc and you should find what you want.

Thanks - I was checking US instead of UK site - it is less than 7 days, so it seems they will charge me £20 for collection and no more.

Delivery is chargeable, and I'm afraid it gets a bit sticky with regards to the Distance Selling Regulations. The reason is that, as each machine is custom built to order, they are classed as personalised items. You may still return the product, but they are within their rights to charge a re-stocking fee. They often waive these though, so I suggest phoning them up and telling them why you want to return it and that you will be buying a 17" machine from them instead. They may very well waive the fees.

It is 7 days for the UK, it's longer for the US, I think 21 days for them. Get on this quickly though.

    Regards

I filled in the form online yesterday lunch time, and again today - and rang them.

The women said her supervisor will ring me back later today or tomorrow.

Hope it goes easily for you. I think Dell are OK about exchanges outside the 7 (working) day period, but under the 7 days gives you more clout.

I think Dell's custom builds count as upgrades using off the shelf parts and are consequently covered by DSR. Personalised goods usually mean stuff like made-to-measure curtains and engraved iPods which can't easily be resold - not that that is a test under DSR.

They definitely fall into Section 13 c:

Exceptions to the right to cancel
    13. (c) for the supply of goods made to the consumer's specifications or clearly personalised or which by reason of their nature cannot be returned or are liable to deteriorate or expire rapidly;

They are made to the consumers specification, and we therefore technically have no right to cancel until we've received the goods. The in the UK we have 7 days to cancel, at which point we are still liable for return postage costs & re-stocking fees.

The fact that the item is not manufactured from the ground up specifically for us doesn't matter, it was assembled to our specification.

Dell is very sneaky and does not say a single thing about cancellations prior to order delivery on their order confirmation, and you have to dig quite deep to even find out about their stance on changing an order that has already been submitted.

The thing is, if they were open about it, people would double check they were happy with the purchase in the first place, and they'd have less customer service issues & bad PR from blogs, forums, etc.

As I said though, all of these charges can be overridden, and orders can be cancelled whilst still in production, but technically we have no right to demand it.

Call them back. Your window of opportunity is small, and unless you've requested the cancellation in writing it's not technically an official request.

Yeah, it's all too easy to let the dates slip.

I have to admit I've only ever skipped through Dell's T&Cs; I know I should but....

Meanwhile back to DSR. The OFT's guide for businesses on Regulation 13 (Instances where cancellation rights do not apply) goes onto more detail on what counts as a specification change and gives a specific example in this case.

Paragraph 3.38 - Unless you have agreed that they can, your consumers cannot cancel if the order is for:
    ....
.... the supply of goods made to the consumer’s own specification such as custom-made blinds or curtains. But this exception does not apply to upgrade options such as choosing alloy wheels when buying a car; or opting for add-on memory or choosing a combination of standard-off-the shelf components when ordering a PC, for example
    ....

    http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/general/oft698.pdf

My last laptop came from the business site, so DSR doesn't apply; it does make you very careful when placing an order though.

I did fill in that form on the website twice.

Phoned them at lunch time and this time he told me he was emailing his supervisor who want around and they'd get back to me this afternoon or Monday. Still no response.

I received it on Tuesday so its been 3 working days since I received. Should I phone again now (even though not Monday yet)?

    Interesting.

I think that the waters around this area are somewhat murky though, for example upgraded RAM would not be covered, but having a GPU possibly would be covered by 13 c. Also, I'm wondering if somewhere amongst all of the various Dell T&Cs is a small line saying that we agree to waive our right to cancel?

Be interesting to see if this has been challenged through the courts; I'll do some digging.

Hmm thats interesting and good to know, I am recently going to place and order for a Core i7 desktop, with a 20% off coupon code. And Alsways after I place my order I call the order modification team, and bluff a cancelation, they they always take like $200 off, and give me free Fed Ex Air shipping.

I got the cancellation although I had to keep ringing them - they never rang me. Eventually I got through to someone who could authorise it. She did offer me 10% off as well, but as I actually wanted a different laptop I said no to the discount.

Lol... then My order took ages to process because the payment didn't go through - turned out their "duplicate" order thing kicked in and I got an email asking to confirm that the new order (a week later) was not a duplicate - in fact, it still hasn't been processed :(
