I am thinking of trying to return my dell inspiron I bought earlier this year solely because I am very unhappy with it. Has anyone had any luck doing this before with or without paying the restocking fee?

Your best bet may be to sell it (e.g. here in the buy/sell/trade forum or on ebay) and buy something else.
Out of curiosity, which model is it and what don't you like about it? -
In the past, dell used to do a restocking fee for returns after 21 days. I don't think they do that anymore. Also, why are you unhappy about it? Is it ugly? Bulky? Sold at Wal-Mart? If you ask me, i don't think you could return it. You mentioned you got an inspiron, good luck talking to the Indian people, hope they understand.

its an inspiron 9400/e1705. I am very unhappy with the screen (its extremely poor viewing angle and brightness), some of the plastic parts that move quite a bit, and the very, very loud disc drive

Take it from me.... It you can't just return something months after cause you don't like it... You get a 21 day return time... after that you are kinda stuck with it... Sorry to be so blunt.

I returned my e1405 and that was after 21 days. What I did was I signed onto the Dell chat and asked if I could return it in hope to exchange my inspiron for an xps. The Dell CS rep said acknowledged my request and filed in a request form for me. I returned it the next day and I got the notebook cost credited back to my credit card following the week after. And I have still yet to order the xps m1210 becuase I've been waiting for m1330. So yes, it is possible! And, I didn't even need to pay any resotcking fees. I got back what I paid originally. Try the online chat buddy.
