First let me say that the computer was actually pretty nice. I had a couple of the 'annoyances' that folks have talked about on here: Grainy screen, wobbly battery.
The biggest thing for me - and something that I wasn't able to identify from pictures on the internet - is that the hinges aren't flush with the chassis when the lid is closed. They protrude from the back a 1/4 inch or so, which isn't a big deal aesthetically, but this is also how my current Compaq (r3000) is designed, and after years of sitting on the hinges in my roller bag, I've had to super glue both hinges back together after they cracked at the seams.
The good news is that:
1) I think it's a nicer looking notebook than internet pictures give credit for
2) The 'total satisfaction' return was absolutely painless. I called up, talked to a rep, and the UPS man came to my door the next day. I didn't even have to print off labels - he had them with him when he came.
Overall, I think i'd recommend the Vostro if you're interested, but I will be going with a Thinkpad this time around. I've heard the customer service is horrendous, but hopefully I won't need it.

Good luck. I would appreciate that you leave your feedback here after a few months. It may be valuable.

After a few months? I'm a little confused. The transaction is complete. I am very satisfied with the customer service I received from dell. I even liked the laptop alright, but it just wasn't the right fit for me.
Returned my Vostro 1400 this week (quick outline of the good and the bad)
