So I bought a Vostro 1500 at Costco two weeks ago--even though the price wasn't great, it was justified because my wife thought she needed it ASAP. It turns out she didn't need it and only a few nights ago I opened to look at it (fairly stupid since I was planning to return it) and now that I'm boxing it back up I see that it has a nick/scratch on the side! I almost passed out. I don't know how it happened. I'm going to call Costco tomorrow and be up front about this and see what they say. In the meantime, since I'm freaking out, any ideas if I can still return it?
-
Well since you don't know how it happened I wouldn't say anything. Just return it and see what they say. If they bring up the scratch or nick on the side then you can say you don't know how it got there and you wouldn't be lying.
How do you know it didn't come that way when you first got it? I don't have a Costco in my area, wish I did but i've read and heard they have a really good return policy. -
Why are you asking about it instead of trying to return it? Go return it already like you should've a few days ago. Geez.
-
He wouldn't be lying about not knowing how it got there, but he would definitely be lying by omission about knowing it was there. Which is fine, as long as you're OK with people and companies treating YOU in the same manner. I'm sure you are.
-
-
Closed? Well then, understandable to wait till tomorrow, but that's unlike the Costco's I go to.
-
-
Yeah that sounds a little far fetched. And why call? Just go down there and return it. If you do not know how it got there, does your wife? It is very possible that it might have been there when you bought it. If you wan't to be upfront about it, just take the laptop TO THE STORE, and tell them that there is a nick on the side, but you really have no idea how it got there. I almost can promise they will still return it. No questions asked, one great thing about Costco. They make their money off of all of our memberships, they wan't to keep their members happy.
You know come to think of it, I have never seen a "open box" item at Costco. As in, they probably just RMA everything. -
You may have missed the point he didn't know how it got there. Stay with me on this. How do you know it wasn't that way when he opened the box and never noticed it? How do you know it didn't leave the factory in that condition?
DeLL has a scratch and dent outlet store just for that reason. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt to the OP and say he or his GF didn't do it. And somehow he now just noticed it. Why does he as a consumer has to be punished for that? If he put the scratch there then that's a whole other matter. -
You can't be serious.
Do you actually think that companies don't ever lie to us?
I say return it and don't say anything at all, who cares if you lie by omission to COSTCO? It's a freaking rich, successful company, and I'm pretty sure if they DON'T let you return it it'd hurt you a lot more than returning a computer to them with a cosmetic blemish on it.
I'm all about sticking it to the man, the little guys need to fight back however they can. -
I`m sure there are people who would return it just for the nick/scratch. Costco is good about returns, just take it back.
-
People like you are great about "sticking it to the man" as a justification for doing what you know is wrong. Again, that's fine, but then don't whine when someone uses your own level of morality on you. And trust me, people who talk about "sticking it to the man" are the BIGGEST WHINERS on the planet and constantly think they are being picked on. They're like super-sissies. -
Don't get personal with me just because I disagreed with you. You couldn't be more wrong about EVERYTHING you just said, and I think trying to define me based on a single lighthearted post I made betrays your ignorance. -
I bet kamehame is dead on, but feel free to try and disprove this theory.
-
How would I do that? Make several paragraph post disputing how I am not at all what he's ignorantly labeled me as, just for you to say "lol ya rite u prolly maed dat up!!1" ?
Get real, that's not what this forum is for, and I'm not about to stoop to that level. -
There is such a thing as being a little 'too honest', ya know. But hey, if you want to be the 100% totally honest schmuck, it's a free country. Knock yourself out.
The fact is, honest or not, they're gonna treat you in any way they see fit, including lying by omission, bait & switch, etc...which happens all the time. I'm not really talking about Costco per se since I've had nothing but good experiences up there, but Best Buy and a few others, I'd have no problem lying by omission to based on past experiences.
Which is also why I don't go to those places anymore. -
I am planning to go down there first chance I have tomorrow. I cannot go today because I'm working at home! I tried to call because I'm freaking out and would like to know how they recommend handling this and, further, the peace of mind of knowing they will take it tomorrow. It's that simple. -
To MD02Geist:
The fact that you're so sensitive about what I wrote is proof enough, to me at least. I've said it a number of times on this forum and every time the person I'm talking to goes haywire. All I said was "if you're OK with 'anything goes' when it comes to dealing with a company, then you should be fine when they do that to you." That's a very simple statement and not very confrontational, in my opinion. But, like I said, even though I've met LOTS of people who talk about "sticking it to the man," I've NEVER met anyone who has the same attitude about "the man" sticking it to them. And, as I said, usually the people who are into "sticking" it to someone are the ones who are super-sensitive about how everyone in the world is wronging them, which is why they feel the need to "stick" it to everyone else. If you don't think everyone is "sticking" it to you, why do you feel the need to "stick" it to them? Are you just insecure? -
-
I'm not haywire. I'm not even upset...if my language is strong or sounds aggressive, that's simply how I talk. It has nothing to do with angry.
As far as "sticking it to the man" that was a joking phrase I used, it's not like I go around and talk about how "the man is holdin' me down dude."
Fact of the matter is, I don't feel any problems with screwing over Costco, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc, because they don't have a problem with outrageous markups and making a huge profit off me, and quite frankly they'll miss a few hundred dollars a lot less than I do.
I'm not "okay with them sticking it to me," but they're going to do it whether I'm okay with it or not so why not do it back? Because it perpetuates a cycle? Well unless I can get every single one of the untold billions of people on earth to simultaneously stop doing things for personal gain, be entirely honest, and be morally straightforward, then I'm pretty sure my returning a laptop to Cosco with a scratch on it isn't going to start WWIII. I'm not big on being abused and putting up zero resistance. Who wants to be a martyr for commercial entities?
Get over the moral discussions and debates found on a notebook site and get back to the topic at hand...you've stated your case (and then some) now move on or add something constructive (and see if you can't refrain from sarcasm, judgementalism, or apathy). -
-
Sure, if hypothetically giving Cosco back an imaginary computer with a supposed scratch on it is stealing. -
It sounded Far-Fetched because I thought you said they were closed. Which Costco is open 7 days a week. Sorry about that
But I don't know. If I was working from home on a Sunday, and was "freaking out" about this, and wanted peace of mind. I think I would make a free hour happen, and run my butt down to Costco and get it done and over with. Why put yourself through that added stress? And no offense but why come to us, when this can be taken care of right now? But then again, I am in Alaska so it is only 1pm here and the whole day is ahead of me
And to the Moron that thinks it is ok to "steal" from these places (well it is ok from BestBuy, because they are the devil incarnite, j/k). Do you know that Coscto does not have these large markups you are talking about? And the reason they can charge good prices, and have such a great return policy is because they make their money from the memberships. And did you know, the more crap you pull like you are saying you will/would pull, will only increase prices? And increase prices of memberships? It is jackasses like you that is taking money out of my pocket. -
There we go getting personal again, why does it always need to come to that on this forum?
Costco was 32 on the Fortune 500 for last year. Pretty sure that means they aren't hurting. Please check your facts. Also I'll mention that, as a Costco member, aside from some basic groceries their prices are NOT that great (especially on, I don't know, laptops and electronics?). -
So their success makes you think it's okay for you to steal from them?
-
Sure, I love Robin Hood.
Did you have anything constructive to add to this thread?
Plus, I don't see how it's stealing. He's giving the laptop back, it simply has a cosmetic defect (which, by his thread, seems to have been there all along since he JUST opened it). What's the problem? -
Thread closed because the "discussion" had degraded into personal insults and arguments.
