I have called tech support 3 times regarding my issue and have gotten no where. So i am sad to say but i have gotten return #s and will be sending it back.

First start of the problem i was in IE like the 4th day i had the laptop and the screen flickered then i have horizonal lines across the screen, which made the picture distorted. The lines were about 1/8 of inch apart, if you look at your IE icon and broke it up into 4 sections 1,2,3,4 mine would look like, 1 space 3 space 2 space 4. I unplugged AC and took out battery and started it back up and it was fine, so i let it go.

Week later on 3/19 i come home and the laptop is in power save mode, i touch the touchpad and the desktop is all messeded up again. I call tech support talk to 1 guy for 20 minutes he has no idea then puts me on hold for 15 then hangs up, i call back and speak to another tech which i could hardley understand and spoke to him for 48 minutes. during that time he had me hard boot and didnt know why the problem happened. He did a hardware diagonostics test and every thing past.

Now on 3/24 i come home and powersave is on i touch the touchpad and the desktop is all distorted again. I call tech support fuming that i have an $1800 paper weight. I get connected to "Travis" i tell him the problem i am having and first thing he said to me was " that usually could happen after the laptop comes out of power save mode" I then tell him "your done, not gonna fly wit me, next. I need to speak to someone else or your boss" I am a tech support guy myself that does network support/pc support for over 500 pcs and have never had a problem like that. After being on hold for 5 minutes he picksup and says his supervisor is on the phone pls wait 5 more minutes. After 15 minutes he starts to dial "i guess he forgot about me" when i start say hey Travis he hangs up.

Then i call sales which they speak perfect English and they connect me to Customer Service and they set up for senior tech support to call me 9 am monday. Well at 10:30am i called Customer Service and got a return number.

    Sorry i had to vent.

Any one know what the problem could be. I removed the top plastic piece (power button and caps lock light ect...) and pressed the LCD connector down firmly and no change. Rebooting the computer resolves the problem.

    Thanks

Sorry for the bad luck. I wonder if it isn't a driver problem or possibly an XP problem.

When I first got my laptop, I had similar problems to yours except that my screen was completely black. I reformatted it, and everything worked great (about 10 months). A few weeks ago, decided that I needed to do a repair of windows. After that my screen would be completely black when coming out of hibernation. Decided to reformat, and everything went good except I still have that problem.

Yesterday i had the lid closed, but laptop still on. I opened it and touched the touchpad/keyboard to get the screen to come back on. When I did, my desktop look like it was magnified about 30 times.

Driver problem came to my mind as well.

We're probably preaching to the choir, but did you update/change drivers to see if that helped?

Knew something similiar to this issue, where the video card made lines on the screen, making it hard to read. Unfortunatly, nothing fixed it, and even doing a reformat didnt work. This might be similiar to yours, so if it is - your out of luck.

Yeah, i went to dell and downloaded the latest driver. I have the intergrated video card and there is no problems at all i play the videos that came with media center (fast and furious, or ET) i have also played DVDs with no problems at all.

I think it is just a shame with dells new tech support menu's and how they out sourced the techs. Dealing from my personal and my professional use with them, it has taken a turn for the worse in the last 2 years.

i can't even get connected to Dell's Downloads anymore. I'm having to resort to ATI's page, and I'm not sure if that is going to work or not.

I installed a couple of those fancy screen savers and noticed that after that if the screen saver is on and the screen powers off when it restores the screen it is all screwed up, out of sync.

I can fix the symptom of the problem by opening a dos box and alt enter which makes it a full screen text display then alt enter again to get back to windows. This re-ibitializes the video card and all s ok again. I assume this is a driver problem.

I've had something of the sort - sometimes, my notebook would not come out of its screen-saver/hibernation mode properly. I flashed the BIOS and since then, I've noticed a dramatic reduction in how many times this happens, although it still does.

Jeff from Dell stated there is a problem with the E1705 Bios/motherboard/ video card and that its locking up the computer. Thats why they delayed orders for the e1705 til May21 or sooner depending when they get the problem fixed. I canceld my E1705 order and Im going to buy the M170 with the $750 dollar coupon they gave me.

But since they may upgrade the M170 in middle of April I am going to wait. Hope the wait is worth it.

Be prepared to fork over a large amount of cash - the new XPS is supposed to start around *3000* - quite a large chunk of change if you ask me.
