Hey people, I was thinking of returning my Vostro w/ a T7500 and upgrading to a T9300 Penryn, is it worth it?

One factor holding me back is that doesn't the 8600m GT basically bottleneck from the C2D T7250 and above? Especially since the 8600m GT in the Vostro is DDR2. From what I've seen in the forums, the DDR3 performances noticeably better than the DDR2 but too bad Vostro doesn't have those or else I probably wouldn't even have a second thought about the upgrade.

Anyone think they will incorporate the Vostro with the DDR3 or even 9600m gt??

    Thanks

I wouldn't return it for the processor.

As for the graphics card, they will likely have them in future models of the vostro line.

It depends on what you are trying to achieve. Only you can decide whether it is "worth" it.

Well this is basically going to be used for watching movies and gaming. One of my main reason for upgrading is because i want to future proof my laptop as much as possible but of course within my budget. I know a T7500 can basically run any game on high settings no problem but a T9300 will probably serve me hopefully atleast a good 3-4 years of gaming no problem. Is the 8600m GT removable/upgradable in the vostro?

A slightly faster graphics card will benefit you more than a slightly faster processor. :)
And for watching movies, you couldn't be more "future proof" already. :p

Changing the video card would depend on whether you can find a Dell proprietary video card in the future that would be compatible with the motherboard.

My simple answer would be no-you cannot upgrade the video card. Of course, if you are technologically inclined, it is do-able.

Given your requirements, I would probably exchange it since you will probably always think in the future that you should have done it!

Gaming is going to increase necessary resources in the future as the software continues to be more sophisticated. If you want to remain on the "cutting edge", then you would want a desktop that is easier to upgrade boards.

The T7500 should be sufficient for a couple of years. There will always be a new chip and a new video card and if you wait, you will never get to spend any time enjoying using what you have now.

From the articles that have been out recently, the T9300 only offers a slight advantage over the T7500, but it is an advantage--like 10%?

The way that I see it, if you are wondering if you should change, then you should change because it will continue bothering you in the future.

Not worth the wait IMO. I would actually downgrade the processor and save money. Grab a t9300 in the summer off ebay and save yourself some cash.

It is not difficult if you are technologically inclined. If your limits are installing a hard drive or RAM, then you might avoid it.

You can view or download the service manual from Dell on your machine and see how difficult it is to change out the processor--step by step.
