    Hi guys,

My XPS is currently on order but I am wanting to return it when it comes in for a computer that I believe will better fit my needs. My XPS is "In Production" with an EDD 6-30.

Who here has returned a new product to Dell, an under what circumstances do they charge their 15% percent re-stocking fee? What is the best way for dealing with a situation such as mine?

All you do is call Dell, ask for a return number and re-order at the same time. If you do that they usually dont charge you the restock fee.

Still upset with not ordering the QM processor?

Well I re ordered the QM, I actually wish I would of gone with the MSI GT683R or an Asus. I jumped the gun on this purchase which is my fault, I just want to know if there is a way out of the restock fee even if I don't open the computer when I get it. From what I have read, the gtx460 and gtx560 isn't just a moderate increase in performance, but it slaughters the 555m. On top of that, I could save myself over 400 if I went with the Asus.

LOL. Dude you haven't even got the thing yet and you're getting ready to return it? Look, there's a lot of bad talk about every laptop on the planet in these forums. That's the way it is, more people whine when it doesn't work (including me) than people who say it's wonderful when it works. My L502x is perfect. Not one problem. None. Good laptop for a good price. My last 4 computers have been Dell/Alienware machines (well to be honest somewhere in there I got a MacBook Air). Not one problem on any of them. Enjoy the XPS, it's a great machine.

Haha that's my problem bud. I keep looking around after buying and see that this has that, or this laptop scored higher on 3dmark.

I'm just gonna hold my horses and give the XPS a chance. I'm building a desktop in the next year so this will have to suffice until then. I just wish I didn't have to get that huge 9 cell!

the 9 cell isn't really that 'big' i mean yeah it sticks out but think of it as a bump for airflow :D

i think you will like the xps 17 give it a chance and be wary of benchmarks they don't always tell the whole story, you've got to just use it and see if it does what you need it to do

Here is info direct from Dell on Cancels/Returns:

Dell - About the Dell return policy

They have the right to charge the 15% restocking fee. Most cases they don't. You have the right to return w/in 21 days of purchase for a refund/replacement.

Haha yeah, I keep telling myself it will help with airflow.

I'm excited but I'm starting to think I wont ever get it at this rate! I think thats why its going so slow.

Im just the opposite. Every hour feels like two weeks!

I'm in the process of figuring out how I want to set up my desk for this laptop. I have a corner desk, with a rise from the left to center then to the right. I have a small fish tank on the right "rise", with my old 1280x1024 monitor in the center and my wireless hp printer on the right. I'm going to clean this sucker off (it always ends up being a catch-all), move my printer into the guest bedroom across the hall and make some room. On the left, I'm going to purchase a laptop stand with cable management to raise my new xps up off the desk, a 21-23" monitor in the center in front of me, a usb hub will be between the laptop and the monitor for some extra hubs, and some nice new speakers, possibly a Bose Companion 3 system.

I'm trying to figure out what speakers I want. I'm going to pass on the booming bass with this setup. I just want something with nice, clean and accurate sound.

That's no joke, it will help allot for heat management. Usually the intake is on the bottom with the vent on back or side. Not sure how your XPS L702 will fair but it sounds like it will have an i7 in there and will probably crank out a fair amount of heat. I would probably get a good aluminum cooler for it as well; this is the one I use for my HP HDX and it works great: Newegg.com - ZALMAN Notebook Cooler Model ZM-NC2000 Black

My HDX 18 sticks out a bit on the sides but it should be a perfect fit for a 17" notebook.

Dell is usally pretty good with returning the laptop within the 21 day period.

I just ordered the barebones version of the MSI 683R.

Thats what I wish I would of bought. I'm going to give the XPS a few days to live up to my expectations. If it doesn't, its back to Dell it goes.

I am in the same boat of looking around after I buy and trust me - its a pain.

I received a nice L702X with quite a few things and I loved it, however I needed a bit more power and it had a nice scratch on the bottom cover.

So I went for the AW m17r2 from outlet, however it had quite a few scratches/issues. So after 3 exchanges (all had issues), I just said screw it and sent it back.

After a little bit I picked up a m18x. It was a wonderful machine and had awesome power. However when I received it it had a nice chunk of paint missing on the top of my LCD lid. The offered an new exchange and I took it.

After a few days while my exchange was still being processed I realized I didn't need a portable gaming machine so I called Dell and asked them to take it back since it had that issue.

Currently it has been 16 days and I still haven't received my money - even though a credit has been issued to my DPA and credit card.

What I am going to get next - I dunno. However whatever it is, it will be the last thing I order... I just hope it doesn't have problems like the last several orders.

I believe it can take up to 30 days for the full refund to show up being credits or returned.

    I know :)

...but when my XPS 17 was returned it literally went back to my DPA that day. The credit card was another story though.

My account rep is looking into it though since I apparently I have to make a payment on my DPA in the next few days and at that point my account would be my credit amount + my payment amount :p

Well I received mine this morning! I swear that I have never gotten a delivery from FedEx or UPS so early. Apparently you must spend a butt load of money to be on the "early truck."

So far, I love it. I misplaced my FSX disk so I need to order another copy. Might run to Best Buy and pick one up today. Hooked my Logitech Z-5300's up using the on-board 5.1 audio. When my USB X-Fi comes in, I'm going to see how it sounds and decide if I want to send it back.

Right now though, I'm in the process of getting everything set up. And I am totally in love with this keyboard! The keys have a very nice feel to them.

The real test will be FSX when I locate it, but so far so good.

I just called to get an RMA for my 15z this morning, dropping it off at the UPS Store tonight. They didn't say anything about charging me a restocking fee. I was pretty clear about the fact that I was returning it due to the unsatisfactory build quality and a defective panel. Hopefully I don't get any surprises.

I hope that rep gets back to you soon on what has happened on the CC.

I don't think you will get the restocking fee, esp. based on the build quality and it being defective. : ) Be sure to keep your return UPS tracking documentation, just in case!

My one charge though my CC hasn't been updated yet and since I purposely put it on a small card I have to wait or dispute the charge.

When it is being delivery to you just don't sign any paper. Ask the delivery man to take it back.

That's a guaranteed way to get slapped with the restocking fee.

Just make up some BS excuse. Tell them you're not happy with the screen or some crap.

100% false info and the wrong way to handle things. They can not hit you with restocking fees if you don't sighn for it

How can they not hit you with restocking fees? You bought it, you decline the shipment, it's your fault.

You are not opening the product so they can not hit you with a restocking fee. I am Not saying that it's not your fault but that it just the way it is :D I have had Dell send me duplicate orders or orders that didn't include the correct parts and I have declined the shipment and never been hit with a restocking fee

If they were duplicate orders or the wrong parts, then obviously you wouldn't be hit with the restocking fee. If you refuse the shipment because you just don't want it, why would they not charge you?

    Agreed ^^^

Though Dell is a little more lenient with their business customers. If someone no longer wants their computer, the best advice is to call ASAP prior to shipping and request the order cancelled. They will inform the customer to accept it and call Dell for an RMA. If one follows this recipe Dell rarely charges a restocking fee unless the customer calls and says Dell sucks LOL. :D

The restocking fee is more of a scare tactic and they can not charge you one on a refused delivery it's company policy

Any kind of link that says this? They are in full control of what they refund you.
