Hi I recieved my Laptop this Friday. Great took it out of the packaging and the first thing comes to mind is that its HUGE. I ordered the jet black colour. I inserted a CD and the CD Drive made a huge noise and then heard a clicking sound. The is a small gap between the CD Drive and the base. I inserted the Memory Card Pro into the card reader. Doh card gets stuck and cannot remove and it is pushed even further in. I tried using tweezers and tilting it almost everything I could think of. No good. The irst time I inserted the card it came out fine. The second time it gets stuck.
The springy thing failed to spring out the card. My question is that Is this covered by warranty? The card cannot be reached. I guess it need to be opened up. Will Dell charge me for removing the memory card and replacing the reader? Also the CD Drive is not working correctly and has stopped reading any CDs the computer now does not detect the CD Drive. I only have C Drive and I think its a called recovery Drive. Its uses around 9gb of HD.

just replace the drive.............its really simple...(call the support and they send you one)
ps....reinstall Windows on your 1720...(then you get rid of a lot of bugs, etc) -
Yes, it should be. Contact dell through the online chat, see what they say. They should send you a new dvd drive and figure out a way to fix the card reader.
What were you using to play the cd? If you used Roxio, go to the roxio website and download the vista patch, and see if that works -
Im in UK.
I tried to install Fifa 06 well Im buying Pro Evo in 2 weeks time when it comes. The cd drive messed up and is not detected on my "my computer" only the c drive is and the card is stuck in reader, the stupid spring failed and I dont want to lose my data its very important. -
This is John at Dell headquarters. Have you contacted our support about all of this? This is all most certainly covered under warranty, and definitely needs to be addressed.
If you need any help, feel free to send me an email and I'll forward it along to my analyst counterparts in the UK.

Thanks Guys for the quick reply. And also for Dell. I went through chat with my service tag. I was told a few things to do and then even checked in BIOS but could not find the DVD Drive. Then was told to unscrew the DVD Drive (Lock key symbol) I tried that and the nasty Drive would not slide out. Afterwards I realized that Dell would send out a new DVD Drive if I could replace it, which is nice but I just could not simply remove that Drive. I felt I would damaged the Laptop so I told the rep that I would prefer to simply send it back for it to be repaired and also the memory card reader issue needs to be solved. I chatted on Monday evening (around 5.30pm) and the Laptop was picked up yesterday (Wednesday) and should recieve it by next week. I have come across people slagging off their after sale service but I think its great. I was expecting the laptop to be in repair for a few weeks but I was told within 4 business days which is superb. Rep up to Dell on that.
On a side issue how do I enable Intel Turbo Ready? I have 4GB Ram do I really need it?
When I get my laptop back then I will properly do all the setup correctly. I only had the Laptop for 4 days but had no time to check it out and when I did I realized there was a problem with the Drive/Memory Card. I used the battery for a few minutes and it said that I have 3 hours on full charge, I have a 9 cell battery and its on Dell recomended. Is there anyway to increase this? Its low for a big battery that sticks out of the Laptop. -
testing to see if my laptop info is in sig

Lets see now
Edit: Woohh hoow -
For your battery questions, I highly recommend the following site:

For that beast 3 hours is actually pretty decent battery life. The 1720 is a bit of a power hog =)
