I see that Dell provide Roxio as the tool to burn CDs as well as play around with photos , videos.

I have used Nero before for burning CDs/DVDs...

Anyone who can tell which is better and in what way

I personally think that, with all extras (Nero Scout, image/video viewing programs, etc.) disabled, Nero 7 is fantastic. It burns super-quick and all of its functionality is nearly flawless (thanks to the update circa May 2007 or sometime around then). It's much better than Roxio in my experience, which is generally sluggish and rather finicky.

    Just my two cents.

I personally use Nero. I've always found Roxio to be too bloated and cumbersome.

Nero has always been my favorite burning regular CD's wether for data or music files. One of the key benefits of getting my Inspiron 1520 is to burn DVD's to view pictures and watch home made movies. Dell only had Roxio and I was suspicious up until I read this review at http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127289/article.html before including it with my laptop order.

I hope the review was right, otherwise I would of shopped around for Nero at the nearest electronics store.

I don't recommend Alcohol 120% because I have seen it screw up quite a few CDROM drivers. Nero is what I prefer.

I've been using it for over 3 years on two different laptops, very good not sure how you can screw up your laptop drive?

Using A-120% and free Imgburn I get by but find Nero and Roxio OK, suggest you try both interfaces.

Nero is better than Roxio in any way; the amount of features; user-friendliness; presentation.

I got rid of Roxio as soon as I get my 1520.

I wouldn't really recommend using A120% for backing up etc....if that's what you meant. It's mainly for virtual drive mounting and games.

I realized that Daemon Tools was much better for that, though.

I have Windows Movie Maker, -DVD Maker, and -Media Player.

Could I need Roxio for anything? Or is it just a waste of HD space?

I have both, Nero & Roxio but haven't used either. Which one will burn a CD onto a folder in my HD so I can run a game from there without always being required to run a CD to run the program. A good example is MS flight requires I put in CD4 in order to play the game. That is a hassle. I'd like to run it from a folder.

Nero should not even be compared to roxio. It is an insult to the software. Nero FTW!

If the bloat of Nero (superior BTW) gets to you, there are customized versions of Nero called Nero Lite and Nero Micro.

Google for it, I wouldn't use anything else now. I don't need all that other stuff.

I wouldn't buy or recommend either. I use InfraRecorder instead. Does exactly what I need it to: no bells, whistles, excess utilities or price tag... and there's a portable version that can run from a memory stick, which is nifty.

Right now I'm using the Roxio.

I use Nero as well...and as someone else mentioned, I disabled all the "extras" when I downloaded it. Everyone already has dedicated programs for viewing movie/picture/data files so there's no need to add another to the HDD.
    Nero works perfectly.

I use Nero as well, and prefer it to any other app so far. I only install the basic Nero Burning program and leave out all the extras.

That is what my friend told me to do when he sent me the Nero CD.
