Fans of Dell's M1210 (the fighting twelve incher) will be interested in this update to their gaming/business notebook. Our tipster tells us that Dell will put in the old Santa Rosa-style upgrade that we've been seeing all over the place lately, which gives the little guy a bit of a boost in performance to keep it up to date with other laptop lines.

In other non CPU news, the M1210 update will have a 8400M DX10 graphics card, LED backlighting, slot-loading DVD drive, and be 4 pounds and smaller/thinner than the previous M1210. The tipster got his or her hands on it recently and says it's great, but going to be very pricey.

Santa Rosa, DX10, and THINNER. Glad I waited, though I hope it isn't too pricey

Thanks for the link and info!

I think this is the notebook I've been waiting for. Of the previous generation (Napa) notebooks, the Dell XPS M1210 was my slight favorite, edging out the Sony Vaio SZ450. The main 2 things I preferred in the SZ were the LED backlighting and its overall thickness. Now that the M1210 will be slimming down and receiving LED backlighting and DX10, I think I will be content with choosing it over the Sony. I'd still like to see what the Santa Rosa refreshed SZ line will offer, but I think the Dell will now have a big enough edge to win me over completely. :) I just hope they have enough room inside to include 1GB Intel Turbo Memory (Robson).

I wonder just how pricey we're talking... and if I should opt for this instead of a Thinkpad T61...

Keep an eye out for HDMI or DVI. They use the same signals, it is just that HDMI is basically smaller. I know of several HP notebooks that have HDMI, so they will work with DVI monitors and stuff.

I really hope they release the 8400 before they change the motherboards so us current owners can upgrade :).

The fact that DX10 and Santa Rosa will be coming to that notebook, probably at the same time, means a new motherboard layout entirely. Which pretty much kills the chance for current M1210 owners.

I'm quite surprised they're making so many changes to the M1210. If anything needs a revamp it's the Inspiron line. Then again, I'm not complaining. Thinner and an LED display (perhaps the reason for the thinness is the LED display?) and slot load optical drive would be very nice improvements on an already great laptop.

I imagine you are right, but I'm going to hold onto a little hope until they actually announce that they are upgrading both parts simultaneously.

The source said it would be very expensive. I don't think 2K is out of the question.

I'm sure the price will be the same as the current one, about $2000, but these high-end computers are becoming pricey as the low-end continues to plunge, as evidenced by all those $800 lappys.

Computer makers are starting to realize that there are plenty of zealots like us who will pay inflated prices for state-of-the-art components, so it's your own fault. :D

I think the next one will start at around $1600 and move to $2k well equipped, but the current one starts at $1200 and runs about $1500 well equipped, not 2000.

U must have added too much RAM, that is the only thing that drives the cost higher.

I'd say good set-up except for the processor. Unless you are going to do a lot of heavy encoding, photoshop, or other work like that I'd stick with a T7200 and save a few extra $$$.

Oh, and the HD Audio is nothing but a crappy software thing. Scratch that too.

I have an ASUS Lambo now and the HD Audio sound effect is stunning, assuming it's designed correctly. The sound seems to be coming from behind me, very cool. As to the processor, I do use Photoshop and QuarkXpress and other heavy-duty tools, so I appreciate a lot of power.

P.S. Where did you get those cool smileys? I do a blog on smileys! ;)
