Are they neccessary? I'm about to get a 1520, and from my HP dv6500t, I had to slipstream some SATA drivers on to the XP disc. For those who have installed XP on their 1520's, did you have to do this?

I have a m1210 (which uses a SATA hdd), and I've installed OSes at least a half-dozen times. I've never needed to do anything with SATA drivers, the install takes care of it automatically. As your machine is newer, I can't imagine that you would have to do anything either.

Osserpse, could you help me out and direct me to a support site for those SATA drivers? Or just tell me what the hardware is so I can look for them? My dv6500t used some 'Intel ICH-E8' drivers or something like that.

    for vista:
NO, you dont! listen to what others, and IM saying.

pop the windows dvd in and let it boot. You dont need any drivers.

do you honestly think after dumbing down vista MS would make EVERYONE with an SATA drive need to go and get drivers? wheres the thought in that? there is none.

    for xp:
sometimes, id say 1 out of 6 times, i needed drivers, the rest of the time, it went fine. ANY DELL laptop ive owned with SATA, has not needed them, as long as i use their XP cd

Yea, if you use Dell's XP cd then maybe you won't have to, but I used a retail cd, and I had to.

Here's the Windows XP SATA drivers for the 1520: http://ftp.us.dell.com/SATA/R154200.EXE

And also the 1520 is Vista ONLY, so we can't even get an XP disc for it. Thanks for the link, I'm going to slipstream them with nLite now. :)

OK I can't figure out which driver it is that I need to slipstream with my XP disc. Can an owner of a 1520 go to Device Manager and tell me the specific name of the SATA HDD driver? Here is a screencap with the list of possibles:

And did you have to slipstream a chipset driver Osserpse? On my dv6500t I had to install drivers for the Intel chipset on the motherboard... maybe DELL's is natively-supported in XP?

    Thanks.

EDIT: found that the chipset was the GM965 Express by Intel, drivers are on their site and Dell's site. I am assuming these 1520's are identical in setup to HP's dv6500t's, and guessing that the SATA driver will be the same: HEM/HBM ICH8EM.
