It is a SIM Card Slot, its for if you purchased a WWAN option with your laptop (here in US, Sprint/Verizon) Although I'm not sure if they include the slot in the US due to both carriers being CDMA.

So I guess they still include the slot as its cheaper to manufacture 1 case instead of two variants...

If I recall correctly, even CDMA (such as Telus here in Canada) providers will assign a SIM card in order to use their WWAN service.

I'm not sure about the built in WWAN services/SIM Cards, but I know my Verizon PCMCIA card has no SIM card/slot, its just based on its ESN. Planning on hooking up my new lappie to my CrackBerry 8830 via DUN/BT, which has a SIM card, but only for intl. roaming.

you need to have purchased the WWAN module itself.

Without the WWAN card, the SIM slot is useless.
