Tech specs doesnt mention any of this, so i was wondering if the SPDIF is in the headphone jack or not. Any info would be appreciated.

My main concern is just being able to connect my home theater system with my laptop

I think along with the S-Video you can get the SPDIF output.... There is a S-Video to Composite TV-Out and SPDIF-out convertor.....

S-video is a video connector. SPDIF is an audio connector. You cannot get SPDIF out of the S-video, and there isn't a S-video to SPDIF convertor.

I don't think you can get SPDIF out of the headphone jack either. Headphones are powered by electrical signals. SPDIF is a coaxial connection that transmits by RF.

Other than that, there is no SPDIF or optical output on my 1720.

You can use SPDIF if you get the converter thing from Dell that goes to S-Video out.

Yep that was what I was talking about after going through the manual.... The one dc74 was talking about was about the 4-pin svideo receptable.... While a 7-pin svideo receptable can output spdif along with the Y and C signals required for Video.... So what that adaptor shown at svideo.com does is provide a 4-pin svideo output along with composite video output and spdif audio output... :D
