I just bought a new Dell Latitude D620 and one of the preinstalled apps is Microsoft's SQL Server Desktop Engine. It launches on startup and takes up a fair amount of RAM.

Is this a nessessary application? Why would it be preinstalled?

    Thanks.

Some applications use the engine for indexing various files. There's probably a preinstalled application that uses it. Once you find the application, there should be a config option to disable using the engine. Once you disable it, you can uninstall the engine.

Sony Vegas 6 uses it to index media files. I always disable it, then uninstall the engine.

Interesting... I guess I'll have to go hunting.
Any Latitude D620 owners know what the answer might be?
