My notebook which is 3 days old, currently has the average temps of:
CPU small load (firefox, MSN, AIM): 41 (Speedfan says 49, NHC 41, which is right?)
HDD small load: 48-50
CPU heavy load (gaming): 55-60
HDD heavy load: 52-60
CPU is a TK-53 1.7ghz, dynamic clock switching is on, so under small load it's at 800mhz most of the time.
HDD is a western digital Scorpio 5400rpm
I'm asking because my desktop (only one case fan) CPU runs at 35 idle and ~50 load, HDD 40-50, my notebook's temps seem a little excessive, especially that the parts are lower end.
So the question is, considering the temperature outside is 30C (probably around 28 inside), are those safe operating temperatures? And which is giving me the right temperature reading, SpeedFan, or Notebook Hardware Control?

Those are very good temps for laptops. Even tho they are as you call them "lower end parts" you gotta realize that their stuck in a very tight case. A desktop case has ample room for air to flow and much bigger/better fans cooling it, but inside a small case of the laptop chassis, there is little room for that. Also, all the components are very close to eachother, thus making it tough to keep cool especially with a very small fan.
Most cpus these days are good up until 90* or so depending on their specs, so you idling at 41* is a great temp, especially considering the ambient temps of 30*. During the winter, I won't be surprised if ur cpu idles in the low 30s.
The hard drive is a little on the hot side, but thats still within limits.
Safe operation temperatures?
