I'm going to do a clean install of Vista soon but my battery is dead, won't even recharge, needs to be replaced.

Just wondering if I will run into any issues ?

One quick question, new battery. Dell seem extortionate for an Inspiron 1520 replacement. Worth a 3rd party risk? Seen some non OEM ones on ebay with a 1 year guarantee for half the price.

    Thanks

EDIT - Woah, just checked the Dell website again. I'm sure it was £60ish last time I looked. It's now £100!

You can sometimes find original Dell batteries on Ebay as well, for much lower price as on Dell site.

I have a Chinese knockoff 9-cell battery for my Studio 15, and have never had any problems with it. I paid $60, compared to the $160 that I would have had to pay Dell for an official battery.

That said, it's best to get an OEM Dell battery from eBay if you can, since it will be cheaper than buying from Dell, but more reliable than a knockoff.

To answer the original question, there should not be any issues if you're installing Vista on a laptop with a dead battery. It'll be like installing Vista on a desktop; just make sure you don't unplug it or something while the installation is running. Even then, the worst that can happen is that you'll corrupt your installation and will have to start over.

Cool, thanks for the answers. Bios is up to date anyway. Will get round to buying a battery. Clean install next week.

How often do you need to replace batteries? Just curious. ;)

Usually, a lithium ion rechargeable battery will last around two years before losing significant charge capacity. I've had my 6-cell since August of 2008, and according to battery meter programs, and my own observation, it has not lost much, if any, life.
