    Good day,

I have Alienware R4 17 laptop and just upgraded to NVME Samsung 970 Plus. Speeds from CrystalDiskMark 6 are 2300Mb/s vs expected 3500Mb/s in NORMAL Windows environment. All Read/Write speeds are proportionately slow.

When I run CrystalDiskMark 6 in SAFEMODE I observe expected speed of 3500Mb/s. I conclude that something is interfering with ssd speed while in Windows. Whatever it is, is DISABLED when booting to SAFEMODE.

Question is HOW do I find the offending software or driver and get expected speed of 3500Mb/s in normal environment of Windows 10?

    Thanks

Do you have the samsung NVMe drivers?

You can disable individual apps from starting with windows by opening Task Manager and then going to the startup tab. I'd disable them all and test it to see if it is indeed one of those apps. Then you can enable them a couple at a time and retest.

Then it's not a normal startup application causing the issue.

Was this a fresh install or did you clone the drive?

I mean if you're concerned about maximum performance then I would do a fresh install of windows. If that's too much work then I would just be happy you still have a fast drive and that you'd never notice the difference in speeds anyway.

Can you please run Atto as suggested and post screenshoot of results and ssd +pch temp (Hwinfo64). And disable the patches for testing. InSpectre tools. Thanks

    Hello,

    Thanks for your reply.

    1) Disabled INSPECTRE TOOLS.
    2) Temperatures, using HWINFO, went up to maximum of TEMP1 80 degrees and TEMP2 100 degrees.

Your ssd throttle down speed due too high temp. Throttling temp threshold is 70c.

Do as following. Hwmonitor works in Win 10 safe mode.

Run tests in normal Win mode and write down max temp.

Do the same but in Win safe mode. See if ssd temp is lower there.

    Hi,

SSD may throttle but this is not the reason. ATTO records the MAXIMUM Rate of the SSD. If it were throttling then the SSD would reach MAX SPEED immediately and and be Recorded.

Then I would note a decrease in the Read/Write Speeds as the SSD heated up. I would have noted the MAX speed having been achieved. This max speed is never observed.

HWINFO would not RUN in Safe Mode.

    Thanks

Hello. Cpu run base clock in safe mod. As well almost non background tasks.

If you havent then read the ssd tweak guide I posted.

I said you should run HWMonitor v1.39 (Portable version).

Another solutions if you can't pin out the culprit is test another NVMe drive in your notebook. Or test out your ssd in a clean installed OS without much other installed than needed drivers and Win Power plan to High Performance.

Test also with Turbo boost disabled in ThrottleStop (aka use base clock frequency).

Edit. Read also the following posts after my post in this thread below... Several is about ssd performance http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...5-owners-lounge.815492/page-248#post-10810171

Also go to PC Settings > Privacy > Background apps

Now turn off all the apps which you don't need running in the background then reboot and test again

Already done that. In TASK MANAGER my CPU is idling most times at 0%. I use 16% of 16GB ram. Besides, the difference in Actual Disk Speed compared to Manufacturer Specs is too LARGE to be accounted for by BACKGROUND PROCESSES.

DRIVER is Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, Version 3.1.0.1901.

I'm not sure why you're capitalizing things as if that's helping explain something when UM is just trying to help you...

Does your SSD have a thermal pad/sink on it? Those temps are high and likely causing throttling as evidenced by ATTO.

Also I still think you need a fresh install of windows, especially if you're concerned about synthetic benchmarks. You're putting more effort into trying to figure it out than just doing the reinstall vs clone.

    Hello,

My CAPITALIZATION has NO meaning except for denoting an item for what it is. For example, TASK MANAGER vs task manager. Here, there can be no confusion that I am referring to the TASK MANAGER system in windows. To say task manager could mean ANY program or even a person.

I do not wish to get into any discussion regards manners or writing etiquette. I have no intention of being rude or unduly outspoken. I am here for assistance. Apologies if it appears otherwise.

UM, capitalized, vs um, which may or may not refer to a pause in one's speech, has been nothing but a boon to me in my quest to resolve my issue and I am GRATEFUL for your assistance... Thank you.

    In response to your comments...

    1) No thermal pads. Thinking of looking for one,
    2) Yes, I agree that a complete Windows Reinstall would solve the problem. I have verified this by installing a fresh copy of Windows on this drive and benching it. The drive performed as advertised. I need the drive cloned as I have programs installed that I no longer have the install disks. For example, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 and Jane's USAF.

I like a challenge, though, so, here I am again, sending this reply from a clone. Thank you.
