In a post a month ago I wrote how my screen got those weird yellow stripes , it was quite annoying since it was only 1 year old .

But Dell was gracious enough to offer me a new lcd replacement even though the warranty expired about 1 month before , so I can't complain and am very greatful for that .

Also finally I had a good excuse to take things apart which is always fun .

The lcd they sent me to replace the old LG screen I had was a Samsung which turned out to be much better .

    Viewing angle
The Samsung seem to have slightly wider angles .

    Light leakage
There is still a noticeable light leakage from the bottom , maybe more then the LG however its unoticeable on daily use other then when the screen is solid dark/black ( like when watching widescreen movies with black bars ) .

    Brightness
Much much better , where is the LG panel was dark even at the brightest settings , I had to lower the Samsung panel a notch or two since the top setting is too bright with white backgrounds ( like the white pages on this website ) .

Its hard to compare when not side by side , here are some photes of before and after .

glad you like the new screen. I don't even see the light leak with your pictures, so I'm assuming it's very good.

The Samsung looks much sharper to me...was this a result of the camera, or is it actually that much sharper?

Odd, on the 17" screens i find this just the opposite.

Are you using 15" or 17" screens?

Kudos to dell for making a happy customer!

Thats a 17" wxga screen , the new panel is the Samsung .

Nope , its a result of my shaky hand .

    ptang asked private :
Its pretty easy and requires only a screwdriver , I'll admit I was worried too because some parts are very fragile and you have to be very delicate opening the bezal and handling the panel . Beware not to touch certain areas in the back of the panel and ofcourse
not to drop the screwdriver or anything on the surface .

The good part is that Dell supply a complete and easy to understand service manual online and for download .

You can go ahead and read what you have to do in the service manual for the 1405 that way you'll be ready when the panel arrive , I suspect it would be a bit different from the 9300 but not much .

I found that the Samsung on mine had better viewing angles then the LG. The LG was sharper though. I decided to keep the Samsung and sacrifice some sharpness for less eye achs.

I think you cannot know what panel you'll get .

I didn't see "sparkle" at any of them , however with solid bright areas ( such as white screen ) it is uneasy on the eye , not like a plain white paper but more of "shimmering" as you call it . What helps me is to dim the screen a bit .
