    This should become the Official Dell Santa Rosa thread.

    Please post all questions and comments here, as there are a lot of folks who would like to know more about the forthcoming Santa Rosa.

    I myself am one of those people.

    What exactly is Santa Rosa? I mean, I know the basics such as it being a brand new portable platfrom from Intel, but what exactly will it do? Do you guys think that new, more powerful components will be introduced on this new platform?

    Santa Rosa, a fourth-generation Centrino platform, will have the following features:

    * Second generation Intel Core 2 processor (code-named Merom) that uses Socket P
    * 800 MT/s front side bus with Dynamic Front Side Bus Switching to save power during low utilization
    * Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset (code named Crestline) with Intel's GMA X3000 graphics technology
    * Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/ n mini-PCIe Wi-Fi adapter (code named Kedron)
    * NAND flash-memory caching (code-named Robson)
    * EFI, a successor to BIOS
    * Intel Dynamic Acceleration (IDA), better Windows Vista Aero support

    Very nice. Sounds very promising.

    When you say Second Generation...do you mean Core 2 Duo? Or a successor?

    I think it means it's the 2nd Core 2 Duo processor. The first one being the one that is currently out now.

    Sounds like a good idea. From that article: "By the second quarter of 2008, Intel will replace Santa Rosa with a new platform (codenamed Montevina), which will support Intel's new 45nm-based CPUs (codenamed Penryn) and a new generation of ICH9M-compliant chipsets (Cantiga), along with Intel's new Wi-Fi/WiMAX technology, said the sources. "

    If you have a decent running machine now might as well wait.

    I believe the Merom Core 2 Duos is what is already being shipped with newer systems. Santa Rosa, I believe, will have a second generation of Merom, I'm just not sure what it's called.

    That I'm not sure of. I think that once Santa Rosa comes out, new systems and designs will be available. I can see PC makers just redesigning current models with Santa Rosa. Its a tough call. We'll just have to wait and see how Dell and others will react to Santa Rosa.

    Hopefully the X3000 will have some decent drivers to actually run some games.

    its not when DELL decides to launch santa rosa, but when intel decides to ship them to manufacturers like dell. Hopefully, it'll be in time for the mad back to school rush this year around.
