Normally my notebook is quiet except for when the sony dvd decides for start spinning for no reason.
So when it's this quiet, I sometimes hear scratching noises (kind of sounds like crunching up paper but much more quiet) coming from, I believe my hdd, sounds to be where the express card slot is.
I can't tell exactly where it's from but I think it's coming from there, think I can get dell to ship me a replacement hdd?
Can I also request a dvd drive (it's a sony) replacement based on its too loud?

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
All hard drives makes noise, that said some make more than others, there is an option in the bios where you can set the hard drive to performance mode(fastest) or acoustic mode(quietest). If it really bothers you, let them know,a swap might fix it, or it could end up being worse. Noise has never been that big an issue to me, so I'm not much help there.

What hd is in your system? I've found over the past 10 years that all hard drive brands have their quirks. Each brand has specific characteristics. My new notebook has a Seagate 100GB and it kind of sounds like you've described. My 8600 inspiron had a Fujitsu and it was extremely quiet. Western digitals have issues with the heads parking every 20 seconds and it makes a most irritating clicking noise. No noise when used as an external drive though. Sold it because of the noise.
Your drive is most likely operating normally. Seagate desktop drives sond like their notebook drives only louder. Western Digital desktop drives sometimes make random clicking noises. It sounds like metal does when it flexes. I had 2 drives with that issue. Over time it all but stopped. They are now 5 years old and still going. -
I have a samsung 160GB hdd (from dell), usually its really quiet. The scratching noise doesnt really bother me. It's more that I'm afraid its about to break down or something.
