I was looking at a friend's new 1520 notebook and noticed that after windows starts up, the screen will go black for a second and then come back up. Is this normal? Is it due to the graphics card? He got the 8600GT graphics card.

My 1720 does the same thing. One blink of the screen aftwer Windows finishes loading. It also happens after resuming from sleep mode.

hmm.. that's weird.. I wonder if it might be the graphics card? Do you guys think that this is something that will be fixed in an update?

My 1420 was doing the same thing, except it would blink and then kick the resolution down serveral notches. Dell had me change something in the settings, it still blinks but the resolution will hold now. It doesn't seem to do it when the wireless switch is turned off. Kinda weird.

Yep, I have noticed that on my 1420 as well. No problems with the resolution though.

My 1520 does it also... It really does not do any harm, so I doubt there will even be a 'fix' in the next update.

I had an HP that did the same thing. I'm thinking that it's an Nvidia video card thing with windows vista. It's not horrible but I find it kind of annoying.. I'm hoping that Nvidia or Microsoft will release an update to fix that.

My Dell 1420 Inspiron has the same screen flickering problem, when awakened from sleep mode or hybernation. Any solutions?

I read somewhere on these forums where someone said that it was the PC checking for external monitors. I have no clue if that is accurate or not though.

Heck, my desktop PC does this every time it boots up. I just got used to it I guess. This baby's been running like a dream for going on 2 years in it's, more or less, current state. :)

It probably does have to do with the graphics card.

You can try Les's (Flamenko's) TMM tweak to see if that helps.

Newer NVIDIA drivers should fix it (after 156.15 or so, not sure about other branches). It happens because TMMM sets the screen resolution to the same thing as it was when the computer booted, and the mode change causes the screen to blink. One fix would be disabling TMMM, but that would also disable hotplug support.

I'm writing this message here in case this issue has been bothering you and you haven't found the answer yet. Here it is:
What's going on is that Vista looks for another monitor upon startup. When it does this, the monitor blacks out for a second and then comes back, repositioning your mouse pointer and re-setting desktop. Here's how to stop this annoyance:

    1. Go to start - control panel - administrative options - task scheduler.
    2. On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there).
    3. Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."
On top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."

This will solve your problem. If you do use a second monitor on occasion, be sure to remember to restore this function.
