A family friend of mine brought me an old dell notebook with a cracked screen and asked me to recover the files. After doing so she asked me if I could use any parts or have it recycled someplace - I agreed. Its an Insperon 1501 and has no "parts" I can salvage since its about 6 years old now. I was trying to think of interesting things to do with it but the screen is unusable and there is no OS installed. Are there any techniques such as disconnecting the built-in monitor that might make it use the VGA output from power-on?

    Thanks

There is nothing stopping you from removing the screen and using it with an external monitor. Otherwise, you could probably get $50 to $60 for it as it is on eBay.

If I disconnect the monitor it will default to VGA so I can get into the bios and everything?

if not you can always use the Fn + Fx key to switch to external monitor

usually once you select the external monitor it boots up on that display
