On a few occasions, the screen on my Inspiron 6400 will just go dark. Not off, or black, but dark. Basically, everything does turn black, but the backlight is still on. Nothing can bring it back except holding the power button for a manual shut down.

Any ideas as to why this occurs, or how to fix it?

It has occured twice today while opening a video file in Windows Media Player from an external harddrive (Western Digital 80 GB).

    Specs:
    ATI x1400
    Intel C2D 2.16
    1 GB RAM
    60 GB Harddive

My name is John, and I work at Dell headquarters. A quick question: can you reproduce this every time you try to open certain videos?

May be your problem is the same as in threads

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=78053

    or

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=78772

    or

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=112673

    Under some conditions like:
    - pluging the AC-Adapter
    - activation of the power save modus (switching of the display)

the system sometimes (not always on my computer) will hang up.

One of these threads you are allready knowing. The best and longest discussion to my point of view is included in

Everybody with the problem above should look in future there.
