Okay, I've already changed my resolution on my 1520 comp that I ordered from 1440 to 1680 and then back to 1440 again. I'd just like to settle this once and for all and get input from you guys on which I should get. I'm a gamer.....I'd say I would play games on this laptop at least once a day, and would want them to look reasonably good. I heard that its better to play in a comp's native res and thats why I opted for the 1440 but now I'm hearing most games could handle the 1680. I'm stuck in a bind about this. More than that though, I'm crazy anime/movie buff and would want that to look sharp too. I had a UXGA on my old 15.4 which was nice but it was just waaaaay too small. Sorry guys I guess I'm just crazy OCD. So.......opinions?

Well ive been playing STALKER on 1440x900 and it jerks now and then. But i could lower the custom settings - cause they are on high. But yeh 1440 is my recommendation.
Btw ive got a 1520 as well.

The 1680 resolution is difficult to drive for the new games even using the 8600GT and T7300.... So I think you are better off with the 1440 res....

    Hi,

Yes, thats also my opinion, besides on the 1680 resolution, everything will be displayed very small.

I'd also go for the 1440, seems like a very good compromise to me.

    1680x1050.
You could just lower the resolution when you game.

1440 x 900 on 120 DPI. Nice balance for tasks and legibility.

1680x1050.... The thing about games is that they are already imperfect... it's not like watching live action where you can see the perfect lines and incredible detail. Games are well.... games! They are animated obviously and even if you lower the resolution below that of the native resolution, you *shouldn't* see much difference at all. Plus, the newer LCD technologies are alot better at scaling then the older LCD technology. I'd always opt for the higher resolution screen because you can always go down when need be, but you can never go up.

    Hi again,

I agree on gaming, lowering the resolution a bit is no problem. I also play some games on 1280x800 instead of my native 1440x900 and it is just fine to me.
But on Windows, lowering the resolution is not a good idea as it looks terrible. My opinion is that 1690x1050 is too high for a 15"-display, everything is very small there which isn't comfortable for longer work if your eyes aren't perfect. I don't know if vista is much better in scaling to larger fonts than XP, which isnt't very good in this respect. And then, there's still the browser, Word, Excel..., where I don't want to have to zoom every time.

I've got 1440x900 on a 17" display and like it. Resolution could be a bit higher, which would equal the 1440x900 15"-display (or 1680x1050 on 17"), but for example 1920x1200 on 17" is too small for me, and thats about the same as 1680x1050 on 15".

I'd say 1440x900 is just fine for your notebook.

In Vista you can easily change the DPI to whatever you want which will increase the size of the writing while leaving the resolution set at the native resolution.

I have a WSXGA+ display and love it. I don't find the writing too small at all.

Same here.^ I'm very pleased with my WSXGA+ screen. If you like having lots of space as I do, then you should seriously consider WSXGA+.

People tend to forget that you are a lot closer to a laptop display than a desktop monitor, therefore you cant really compare screen resolutions between the two. Ie. If you find a resolution too small on a monitor, it doesn't mean that it will be too small on a laptop.

But does that work flawlessly? And does it also affect programs like the browser? I guess, zooming all the time is pretty annoying.

My husband has the 1680 resolution on his D820. I really dislike it as it I feel like I have to squint to see anything. He says that he wishes he had the 1440 resolution instead as the 1680 resolution does strain his eyes sometimes.

If you game, I'd definitely recommend 1280 x 800 since the 8600M GT doesn't have too much problem reaching that resolution at Medium to High quality settings with most games.

1680x1050 is beautiful. I recommend it, but in order to make this decision, look at different resolution screens at a brick and mortar store first.

I agree with crash...you really need to figure out what works for you. Try and go to a brick and mortar store and view screens with the different resolutions. Some people prefer the higher resolutions, and some the lower resolutions.

Definitely hit the store. Depends on your habits as well. 1680 x 1050 is beautiful and I take advantage of every pixel. I would not recommend it to anyone though without having them try it first, some people think it's too small.

I think 1280 x 800 is just so not the right size for a 15.4" display but I respect that it works for a lot of people. On gaming - really makes no difference, as was said earlier games are already imperfect and you don't see the impact when lowering the resolution only in a game.
