on my E1505, often times when I log in, the resolution is at 1024 by 768, then after I log in and catalyst loads, the screen goes back to normal (1680 by 1050), then when i close the lid or go itno suspend mode and come back, it reverts to small size, and sometimes it wont let me select a resolution higher than 1024 by 768.

thats odd, I have the same setup as you, and I have never had that problem,is this a new problem?, or has it done this ever since you got it? when you upgrade your video drivers, do you completely uninstall the old ones? if you dont some old bits from the previous ones can cause all sorts of havock, especially if you put ati, or omega drivers over dells drivers, they are similar, but dell hacks em up a bit, what drivers are you using? I would reccomend downloading driver cleaner, then install the latest of wichever,if you dont do much gaming and are mainly shooting for stability, I'd go with the dell drivers

I would install the updated driver right over the old one, i never uninstalled the old one first, could that be the issue?

Yup, that could do it. You never know what minor conflicts and infighting among old files will cause.

I seem to be having another issue, Wehn I use the system tray icon to change resolutions, it changes but then reverts back instantly with no warning or anything. After it reverts back if I do it again it works properly

have you cleaned your divers?also a complete uninstall is more than just removing them via the cp, I highly reccomend you use driver cleaner pro in the link I posted earlier, my machine is the same as yours aside from the hd and wireless card, and I've never had that problem at all, you might wanna try doing a fresh install with the latestest drivers, I have had a sort of simialr issue on desktop sysytems using beta programs, that after crashing to the desktop would stay at the lower res the program was in, though a reboot always took care of that, from what your describing, I'm pretty sure its a software related issue, namely drivers, and not hardware, good luck with it
