    Hey all,
I got my Inspiron 1720 the other day but one thing thats annoying me is that when I close the lid, the screen doesnt turn off, but instead it goes completely white. I can see it happen when its like 90% closed and I peek through the gap and then when its fully closed I can see the white light coming out from the edges. :(

My current power plan is 'High Performance' and I've got it set to 'Do nothing' when the lid is closed, but the screen should still turn off.
When I set it to 'Sleep' or anything else when closed, it does this fine, so I dont think its a hardware problem or anything with whatever detects if the lid is closed.

    Im running Vista Home Premium.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!

With other power plans it does the same thing. :(

Also, if I go to 'Choose what closing the lid does' and tell it to Sleep when I close the lid, it does Sleep, but if I set it to 'Do nothing', it changes the screen to all white when I close it, when really it should turn off the screen!

did you chg video card drivers?

some modified drivers (from sites like laptopvideo2go.com) don't support the lid sensor on dells. only the stock driver from dell for sure supports that feature.

I did change my drivers to the laptopvideo2go ones, but I read that they were not compatible with the lid so I changed them back to the original Dell drivers, but this didnt fix the problem...

Used both of Dells drivers and a fair few laptopvideotogo drivers and never had the display not turn off if I close the lid.

Yes I did try that...I uninstalled the existing drivers and then installed the drivers from the Dell website, but this still left me with the same problem (i.e. screen turns completely white when closed) :(

Anyone got any more ideas?

did you use driver sweeper after uninstalling the drivers?

    if not, do this:

    1. Download Driver Sweeper here:
    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,67286-order,1-page,1/description.html

    2. Install Driver Sweeper.

    3. Uninstall your current video card drivers.

    4. Reboot in Safe Mode.

    5. Run Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode; select both NVIDIA Chipset and Display in the dialog window, then hit fix.

    6. Reinstall stock Dell drivers + reboot.

    Yes.

Call Dell and talk to technical support.

I don't understand why people just don't call the Tech Support. You PAID Dell for that service, now use it.
