Hey guys, I have a 5 month old Vostro 1000. I noticed the other day that a small area of the lower right part of the screen is slightly darker then the rest of the screen. Not much but it is noticeable especially when viewing a bright white page. I have noticed that it is also slightly warmer in that area then the rest of the screen.

Is this something that is common or should I be on the phone with dell demanding a fix. lol.

    Thanks for the help. :)

You're under warranty, so you might as well get it looked at. Make the call, see what they say.

I understand that. Just wondering if this is a common issue or if this is definitely something that needs to be fixed. I don't have much experience with notebooks and I am not sure if this is part of the break in process so to speak. I don't want to go through the hassle if this is something that is common and will happen again even if it is fixed.

    Thanks

Same observation on my XPS M1530. I don't worry, can live with it.

this is my layman explanation, since im not a technical man myself..

the inverter of the lcd panel is in on the lower part, near the Dell logo and your onboard speakers. as such, the projection is from bottom up. and the inverter does not span the whole lcd panel width. Since the inverter is centralised at the bottom, your bottom corners do not get illuminated as brightly as the bottom middle (remember the inverter is not as wide as your notebook, its only about 5/8 or 3/4 your lcd panel width.

try testing with a blank screen saver at max brightness. you shld be able to discern the ares that are brighter and the areas that are dimmer. look straight on at the laptop, not top down, left right or anywher, just straight at it.

generally you should observe the lower middle regions are brighter than anywhere else.

    1) take some pics, post it, send it to dell..
    2) do the blank screen saver test. or dead pixel buddy, where you can observe any brightness graduation more profoundly..
    3) do it in a totally dark room, don't let ambient light affect the observation..
    4) if its irregularly bright dark spots throughout the whole screen, make sure your pics to dell reflect that.
    5) if its rather smoothly graduated brightness from bottom up, be prepared to hear from Dell saying its probably a design compromise (of having the lcd inverter below)..

oops for the lengthiness...i changed my screen once for a similar reason..most of these information i found out from speaking to some dell techics..

regarding the heat, because i have never actually bothered about my panel temperature, i cant say much. heat from different corners or your laptop could be due to anything. but as said, it is hotter at the inverter, because there is where the most of the electrical power runs..

The same thing happened with my XPS M1710 notebook, both the bottom left and right corners of the screen are darker I called Dell they sent out a new screen but it still had the same problem, the Dell tech called in and they have decided to replace the notebook as they weren't sure whether it was the video card or the mainboard. I would call Dell tech support.
