I have a 1520 on order with the 1440x900 screen, and my knees are knocking with nervousness about the screen. Two concerns - whether things will be two small and then the graininess issue, whatever exactly that turns out to be. To understand how much smaller things will be vs. a 1280x800 screen, how many icons fit on the destop (vertically) with the 1440x900 screen? The lower res screens manage seven. On the graininess issue, do the laptops at retailers have the same issue (Toshiba, HP, etc.) or is it just Dell? It doesn't make any sense that it would just be Dell, because I'm sure these other outfits use the same screen manufacturers.

It's not just dell. It's called the silk screen effect.

Do you like the 1440x900 screen? Is it sharp & clear? Still trying to guage how much smaller everything will be vs. the 1280x800 screen.

I'm not worried about my screen, I would wait it out. I have read too many bad and good reviews and will make my own decision about the "grainy" screen when it arrives. Personally I don't believe that I am as picky as some when it comes to screens.
I will do a comparison with my 22" Acer when it arrives. -
Mine manages 8 icons vertically, but they seem oddly large at default settings (larger than my xp icons anyway). The graininess is noticeable, but I find myself preferring the coating in games/movies because it does make colors appear a bit more vibrant. The graininess is primarily a very light smudge effect, like a thin layer of oil on the screen which darkens whites a bit. I have used my 1520 for several hours today and find I really don't mind the effect, and for the price I just can't be bothered to send it back when I know a replacement screen (with the glossy coating) would probably be exactly the same.
