I have the settings on my E1405 so that the screen saver will turn on after two minutes. This works until I plug in my USB mouse. When the USB is attached, the screen saver will not turn on. How do I change this?

when the USB is plugged in, the notebook becomes active again.
Wait 2 minutes after the USB device is plugged in, and see if it goes off. -
This could also be related to the ACPI/USB issue. Check the sticky thread for a possible fix.

Yeah, I have a HP dv5020 laptop and am having the same problem.. I had a microsoft laser optical mouse that didnt cause this problem, but I returned it to Fry's and got the older version microsoft optical 3000 for laptop from office depot for 10$ only !!! Sicne then I've been having the same problem you're describing..
I have tried everything I could think of, but the screen saver woun't start unless I remove the USB receiver.. let me try plugging the thing in my desktop's pc and see if same thing happen there.
Edit: I just plugged the receiver in my desktop, the screen saver worked there.. wierd.. looks like it's a USB issue with windows itself, since I got a different spec than yours. although I have windows xp pro sp2 on both computers
amd ml-32, 1GB memory, 80gb HD, windows xp pro sp2, ati xpress 200m gfx card. -
There has been lots of problems lately because of the USB slots -
This sounds like a similar problem to what I am having with my desktop. I plugged in a Logitech optical mouse and the screen saver works but i can no longer set the power option for the monitor to turn off.

I did a test on my e1705 with an HP optical USB mouse. While on batteries, my laptop's screen turned off according to the custom power scheme, but the laptop would not hibernate. Without the mouse, the laptop went into hibernation according to the power scheme.
I have the MS hotfix installed, and the power drain appears to be less, but I did notice that the hotfix only seems to work if the computer has never entered hibernation/stand-by. If the computer has done a hibernate/stand-by, I have to restart the system to "reinstate" the hotfix. Obviously the hotfix doesn't fix the usb problem.
[update]
After doing a little more experimenting, I found that I had to choose one of Dell's power schemes in order for suspend and hibernate to work. I did have initial success after modifying a custom scheme, but it didn't always work. This may also allow the screensaver to turn on, but I haven't tested it. -
Heres the solution from windows website, hope this'll help with ur dell
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895
I'll try it later on my hp lappy
edit: disabling the ehtray.exe did the trick for me, now the screen saver works with no problem while the mouse receiver is connected.. thing is, I need that on display feature of ehtray.exe :/ -
i downloaded the update from the sticky...what is that supposed to do?
-
The update from my last post doesn't have anything to do with update from the sticky, this one fixes the issue with microsoft usb mouse ( problem you have ) while the update from sticky fixes usb using too much juice from battery or something ( which you don't have, right ? )
So, click the link from my last post and follow the steps there ( nothing to download, just some steps to fix the problem ) and report back
Screen saver won't turn on
