Kind of hard to read the specs from that wall of text, but what GPU did you have and what does the new one have?

They were not going to send you a XPS 16 since your warranty will expire in 3 days. They had no good fiscal reason to do so. I would still complain though.

Your title is very misleading with the "screwed" part. I would say even if you complained, it would not do much good. The reason is Dell fulfilled their promise of a machine equal or better. From what I made of what you posted, your replacement is the same model with a few upgrades (processor, hard drive). Although sometimes there are model upgrades, from what I have been told from Dell managers and from around the forums is, if the model is not available (check the Dell outlet), then they will issue a new model [I just checked and your model is still being sold as of 5/5/10 2:59 AM]. It is unfortunate that your warranty expires in 3 days, the only thing I would complain about is asking if there is an extension of the warranty because by the time you receive the machine it may already be out of warranty.

I apologize for missleading title and multiple posts. I am new to this forum and everyone here is helpful with information about Dell system exhange. Thanks everyone.

I was offered to extend my warranty for 1 year for $279.
should I go for it and see what happend with the replacement to cover my butt?

Hmm....I would say not to extend the warranty since it is $279. The reason is $279 is a lot of money for old technology. Chances are the replacement will last at least another year before it breaks down. If I were you I would save the $279 and use it towards a new machine.

I agree with comp. There's no wrong-doing here. You'd be asking Dell for an expensive hand-out to a customer that won't be under contract by the time you receive the product. As mentioned previously, the only conditions which people receive model upgrades are when the model they are replacing is no longer available. You even received a slightly better model as well, so I would say you made out just fine as it is. In all cases the models you receive are returns or refurbished computers, which are subject to availability. You got lucky (or unlucky) in this case since Dell had an available supply.

Pretty sure they have your address and will come and get the laptop w/police or other legal assistance as necessary if you don't return it. I'm going to have to label non-return after you've gotten your exchange as flat-out fraud.

Dell employs a third party recovery ... I think his name is Vinny.. Dell may be changing their replacement policys internally to reduce loss. Esp with your warranty ending- they think that you will either 1- pay for a warranty ext, or 2, nothing and its not their problem anymore-

Furthermore with all the recent issues with the 1640, Dell sees less risk sending you an upgraded 1530 then a 1640...

Dell may also be aware that there are some that are just angling for an upgrade, esp when they are refered to "others" in this forum getting X, Its munchausens by proxy...

    well, just got the replacement:

    -damaged LCD
-black top instead of blue like original
-hard drive plastic side cover is sticking out
-same message pops up saying that BIOS cant detect the power supply and the battery might not charge
-minor scratches all over the assembly
-no return label in the box

Called dell and they want to send out a tech to fix the issues, I said no and replaced parts (LCD, HD plastic cover) myself.

Managers will call me back tomorrow, gonna wait and see what he has to say.

Not trying to benefit of off dell, just want some kind of compensation in return for my work on the replacement machine. But proly not gonna get anything.

If you mean compensation because you asked to replace parts yourself, then that is definitely not going to happen.

Return the laptop..it's the right thing to do, and was part of the agreement you made with Dell as part of your system exchange. If you don't return it, you will start getting form letter, phone calls! And, they will charge you or do what is necessary to recover their goods.

They do employ a Third Party "Exchange Customer Care Team" to help you with your laptop return, as necessary to Dell.

You will probably receive a "courtesy letter" from them w/a FedEx Return Label.

    Cin...
