My friend has a Dell E1705, around 2 years old and his LCD screen seems to be screwed up. I was wondering if it is possible to repair it. And no more warranty from Dell. Any suggestions?? :)

my guess is a bad Video Card...

Try hooking it up to an external monitor and seeing how that shows up...

Most likely going to need to replace the part :|

I don't know if this is possible, but at one point a number of Dell 17" machines had display problems after a year or two. You might be able to call them and get it replaced as per this:

    http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2007/04/09/10675.aspx

That is the only 'free' hope I can give you.

Otherwise, eBay is a great source of parts...find a pulled LCD+bezel and install it yourself.

EDIT: Frazell is right though, it might also be the GPU. Does this happen with an external monitor like he suggested? Even S-video out to a TV would give us enough information.

Scary. If you think you can install the parts, get it off a reliable e-bayer.

Thanks for the quick replies, I'll tell my friend to give it a try on the external monitor or call DELL. Thanks again :)

@ Greg , those were vertical lines , I had a post about that where they replaced my LG panel with a Samsung one .

@ John , it indeed looks like a GPU as frazell said , lucky for you the GPU on the E1705 is replaceable , heres what I'd do

    1. goto Dell's website and download the service manual .
    2. follow the manual and try to reseat the card ( check connectors while at it )
    3. if failed , buy a new/used card and repeat #2 . If you game its a good opportunity to upgrade to a 7900GS / 79X0GTX and have yourself an XPS .

    Dang....

I have no idea how to fix it, but would recommend plugging your laptop into an external monitor. If the problem is still there, it's probably the video card or something.

What do you mean by screwed up? Does it look kind of grey with a whole bunch of lines flickering around with different colors? Does it remind you of a CRT monitor at the wrong refresh rate?
