I just received my second hard drive case from dell. Unfortunately the only way I was able to get it was by buying it as part of the the second hard drive upgrades. I tried multiple routes and methods, using suggestions from these forums, but no joy. It did not cost that much, £60 with a 120gig hard drive, which i will use as my new portable backup drive.

I basically got the best help by phoning tech support and getting them to help me. They were very helpful indeed, passing me onto the right sales team, making sure that I received the drive, and phoning back to check that it had the case and interposer with it.

I did note that the case is different to the case in the first slot. The tech support guy alerted me to this, which I initially did not believe. But however, I was wrong, it is a mirror image of the drive case, so make sure you ask for the second bay drive case.

I don't think that thread helps with UK customers.

Those part numbers don't exist on the Dell UK Website.

So fxgogo, I want to do what you've done. Did you get screws with it? Total including VAT and shipping, and a HD was £60?

Lol - Well I'm a UK customer and have just received my Interposer and HDD2Caddy from Dell UK about 10 mins ago which I requested using those part numbers.

As the original posts says - go through Tech Support rather than Sales. As you have stated you wont find any reference to the parts on the UK site but the part numbers are good.

Didn't get the screws though (I did ask for them) so looking at a trip to the hardware store later.

Wow, that is so wierd. I used and tried to order the part numbers mentioned on the forums and the tech support guy did note that they were the right numbers, but did not seem able to order them seperately.

So a couple of things seem to be happening here. People seem to get a different experience depending on who answers the phone. The tech guys also seem to be able to solve things better than others, maybe down to them having been there longer, who knows.

Well I assume he used the part numbers - the two boxes that the caddy and interposer came in both had the part number on the front label.

My rep rang to find if the parts had arrived and informed me the screws hadn't been sent because they haven't got them at the mo - got some locally and all installed and running.

But yeh - I'm sure it's a crap shoot. When I originally asked the sales rep about them he told me he couldn't help and gave me the contact for a thrid party spares company. In speaking to them they dont do anything for current Dell machines, only discontinued. Presumably once discontinued Dell (or their suppliers) off load the parts they have left to third partys.
I recently had a screen change during for which they send you an email to reply directly to should you need further help with the problem in question.
So, I thought I'd be a little cheeky and reply to it asking about the caddy and interposer with the part numbers. He wrote back to say he'd stick it in the post. Resulto.

Just be nice and if they send you a service survey give them decent feedback. I assume that the survey is linked to the rep and they appreciate the fact that you've made them look good to Dell ;)

Yeah it does sound totally like a crap shoot. If there is one thing dell could do, it would be to simplify the support. It is too complex. Well at least I got the drive up and running now. My system has been in play around mode for too long. Now for a night of OS installs. Yeah!
