Would this be an OK idea? Or is it best to leave windows security running??

what windows security are u talking about? windows firewall!?

Yes! infact; you need to disable it (windows firewall) to avoid problems/complications with zonealarm firewall. this is true for any firewall out there. you dont use two running at the same time. you only use one.

zonealarm is really good. i use them myself.

I was a big fan of Zonealarm (turned on to it by www.grc.com) but it headed towards bloatware and they bombarding me with advertising - like Steve at GRC I went away from it. Now I rely on the Windows firewall.

The main reason I liked it was the detection of outbound connections but in the end one had to accept so many applications from calling out without really knowing why they were doing it that it became a waste of time. I think the trojan authors can get around it anyway by writing stuff which calls out via IE etc.

I liked ZoneAlarm Security Suite on XP. It is a cost item, and they messed it up a bit going to the Vista-compatible version, but on XP it was fine.
